Is there anything more fun than hearing a catchy rhythm that makes you stop with whatever you’re doing?
Yes, those precious moments remind us of how enjoyable small things in life are. And who’s better at keeping up the tempo than a bass player?
Victor Wooten is an American bassist, record producer and educator.
He’s been active on the music scene for decades now and has landed many successful projects so far. With a long career and five Grammy Awards, Wooten felt the need to share some of those magical tips and tricks.
That’s where the material for his book came from.
Victor’s book The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music is an amazing treat for everyone who enjoys an outstanding musician in action, which is something most of us can relate to. Since 2017, Victor has played bass for the metal band Nitro.
One of his biggest achievements is the fact that Wooten won the Bass Player of the Year award from Bass Player magazine three times, becoming the first person who has ever won it more than once.
In 2011, this outstanding fellow was ranked No. 10 in the Top Ten Bassists of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine.
Let’s hear him out, shall we?
Armed with a signature Fodera Yin Yang bass and Hartke amplifier, Wooten sat down in a studio and MusicRadar recorded one of his phenomenal solo bass jams.
It’s not every day that you hear a man who is so great at what he does, so much so that we were completely glued to the screen during his four-minute solo.
It’s nice to realize that bass can be such a versatile soloist instrument.
Victor is something like a “bass shaman,” he makes you feel like the bass is the only instrument you need to hear. All these melodies he came up with are amazing, organic and complex.
They’re so complex that they seem simple, and if that’s not a mark of a bass genius, we don’t know what is.
There is so much groove in all these different techniques Wooten displayed in the video.
The former bassist of SMV makes bass playing seem smooth and simple.
It’s beautiful to see such a level of musicianship in one man’s act because it motivates you to work harder. The progress is real, it’s visible, it can be accomplished and Victor Wooten is proof.
The man improved so much since he first stepped on the scene in the ’80s.
Today he owns Vix Records, he’s got 11 solo albums under his belt, and a completely delightful playing technique. Have you heard of Victor Wooten’s Berklee Summer Bass Workshop”?
That’s part of his collaboration with Berklee Bass Department, where Victor and Steve Bailey teach together.
Maybe you didn’t know this but Victor also plays cello—he has loved that instrument since high school.
Since it was posted, it has earned more than two million YouTube views in a few years.
The video was uploaded in 2016, and it’s not the first Wooten’s video with millions of views.
More than 307,000 followers can also enjoy his Instagram account, where he posts regularly.
Victor is quite active and he’s not shy to share it.
We were mostly interested in photos and videos related to his music camp, though you can also check out his official website for more information. Keep up the bass wizardry, Victor—we love it!
