Vicki Barbolak is on a mission to bring laughter to the world.
A staple of the San Diego comedy scene, the 60-year-old admits that at first, she was terrified to perform in front of a crowd. In fact, when Barbolak got on the stage, she couldn’t say a word. “It was just terrifying,” she told SanDiego.com.
“People will always tell you, ‘You’re funny, you gotta do it!’ and then I did it, and it was horrible. I hated it and couldn’t believe how much I didn’t like it. I can’t believe I stayed with it since I didn’t like it so much.”
As a single mother on a comedian budget, life wasn’t always easy. She told About-Online.com: “You know, I did move into a trailer about five years after I started doing stand-up. And just because of that— my character is just who I am.” She added: “My comedy is more truthful now … So, I don’t have to try.”
Luckily, Barbolak’s commitment to comedy paid off. Developing a “trailer nasty” persona filled with self-deprecating jokes and truthful humor, she amassed comedy titles such as being named a member of Jay Leno’s NBC Laugh Squad and winning Funniest Mom in America on Nick at Night, ultimately solidifying herself a place in the San Diego comedy crowd.
With everything she’s accomplished, Barbolak decided to test her comedic skills on the America’s Got Talent stage.
In a pre-recorded interview, she quipped:
“America’s Got Talent could really change my life. This could take me from a trailer park in Oceanside to… a trailer park in Malibu.”
By all accounts, Vicky is just as funny in real life as she is in her routine. From the moment the judges start asking her questions, she’s already making jokes. Little do they know the hilarity that will ensue.
“Heidi, you’re looking at me like you’ve never seen a trophy wife in Los Angeles before,” she begins, immediately drawing laughs from the audience.
From there, the comedian takes them on a hilarious adventure that includes conjugal visits, Elon Musk, uncomfortable bras, and court-ordered therapy. From beginning to end, she keeps everyone roaring. With her observational humor and unexpected twists, she’s the epitome of a true comedian.
When the entire crowd stands to their feet, she can’t control the tears.
Mel B. immediately expresses how she’s had a tough year and has needed a laugh. “You’ just made me properly belly laugh. I love you!” she says gratefully. “I loved you too,” Heidi adds. “You had me already from your opening line.” Howie Mandel goes as far as to say she fills the void left behind by female comedian Joan Rivers, while Simon doesn’t hold back at all, calling Barbolak the funniest person they’ve ever had on the show.
Since being uploaded, Barbolak’s hilarious audition has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
“She’s actually better than a lot of comedians I have seen recently on the Tonight Show.”
“She was really good. Very witty on the comeback.”
“When she did the ‘trophy wife’ thing to Heidi, I knew she was going to slay.”
