After being on for so many seasons, many people think they’re probably seen it all when they tune into shows like America’s Got Talent.
In many of the shows, someone who is particularly talented singer or a particularly talented dancer comes on stage. Most of the time, these performances go more or less how we expect them to go. While the stories of the contestants may change, ultimately the conventions of their performance seem more or less the same. Still, every once in a while, someone comes along who changes all that.
The ballet dancer from the audition below is on great example of that.
The performer in question was 21-year-old dancer Marina Mazepa.
As Mazepa steps out, she has a bright smile on her face and is clearly excited to be on stage with all the other judges. After a few questions, they learn that she’s a dancer and that it’s been her dream for a long time to appear on the show.
After that, she tells the crowd that she wants to perform and she wants to be an artist. At this, everyone in the crowd gives her a round of applause.
With that, the judges get out of her way and let her perform.
As the performance begins, it looks like it’s going to be just another standard ballet show.
Though her moves are elegant and controlled, nobody is sure what’s going to make the show special. A moment later, she pulls her ballet tutu off… and that’s when things start to get interesting.
Right after that, Mazepa strikes a move that nobody has ever seen before in a ballet performance—she starts contorting herself in some scary positions!
By this point in the dance, people in the crowd are gasping and screaming.
Things only escalate from there as her moves get more and more robotic.
At one point, she falls all the way to the floor and uses her incredible flexibility and strength to pull herself all the way up again from her toes. As it continues, her moves get more and more innovative and impressive.
Halfway through, she transitions back into a traditional, gentle balletic performance. But then before it’s over, she goes back into her bizarre robotic character!
When it’s finally over, the whole crowd and all the judges give her a standing ovation.
When the judges are ready to talk to her, one person says what we’re all thinking: “what just happened?”
As the feedback comes in, everyone says that her performance was incredible, controlled, elegant and so much more. All the feedback that comes in so positive and when it’s time to vote, everyone gives her a resounding yes!
Needless to say, this is a performance that nobody in that room is going to forget anytime soon.
As this clip shows, there’s always still room for originality on shows like America’s Got Talent.
In the case of Mazepa’s performance, she definitely had to break few unspoken rules about how these performances are supposed to go! Still, the result shocked and awed the audience, connected with them and ultimately expressed her own artistic truth. For anyone who is a dancer, this clip is sure to be an inspiration.
