Being famous means appearing on lots of shows to answer questions. Interviews can be serious, funny, or downright awkward but you would expect celebrities to always be on their best behavior regardless.
But that’s not always the case. They are still human so those quirky personalities will come out every now and then. Check out these really uncomfortable interviews and see which made you cringe.
Jesse Eisenberg
Eisenberg has a reputation for being somewhat rude, but this interview for Now You See Me really went from bad to worse.
He called the interviewer, Romina Puga, “the Carrot Top of interviewers,” then told her not to cry now, but after the interview or it would look like his fault.
The interview is full of playful banter and self-esteem hits, and by the end of it, Romina concludes by telling him, “You’re such a jerk.”
Joan Rivers
The late, great Joan Rivers loved roasting and toasting whoever she saw. Her brand of comedy wasn’t for everyone but those who got her style loved her.
Rivers is no stranger to controversy, but she didn’t appreciate being asked about scandalous events from her past.
CNN interviewer Fredricka Whitfield kept pushing Rivers on anything from her “mean” humor to wearing furs.
That last part had Rivers go on a rant that ended with her telling Whitfield to “shut up” with one last accusation, “You are not the one to interview a person who does humor.”
She then left the set.
Samuel L. Jackson
A reporter confused Samuel L. Jackson with Matrix actor Laurence Fishburne. He asked the actor if he got a lot of reactions from his Super Bowl commercial, the one Fishburne had done, and Jackson was confused, until he realized the mistake.
“I’m not Laurence Fishburne!” he yelled.
Jackson added, “We may all be black and famous, but we don’t all look alike!”
The interviewer apologized profusely, but Jackson gave him a hard time throughout the entire interview.
Keira Knightley
This interview was for Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch’s press tour for The Imitation Game.
Press tours can be really exhausting, as the actors get up early to do back-to-back interviews.
One interviewer mentioned to Keira that she looks worn out, something you don’t say to actors.
Benedict rose to her defense, saying, “That’s not a nice thing to say to one of the most beautiful women on the planet,”
Keira then added “Yeah, f*** you.”
Quentin Tarantino
Tarantino has become legendary for his films that don’t hold back when it comes to graphic violence.
During his career, he’s been asked many times if he thinks his movies have any negative affect on others, or encouraged real-life violence.
Krishnan Guru-Murthy decided to bring up the subject with Quentin and he did not like it.
Guru-Murthy refused to change the subject, so Tarantino shut him down, saying he won’t be bullied into answering when he doesn’t want to.
Kristen Wiig
Hilarious duo Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader were promoting their film The Skeleton Twins on Denver local news, when it became obvious that their interviewer didn’t bother to watch the movie.
Anchor Chris Parente asked Kristen if she had any advice on going nude in film. She seemed baffled so he said, “You do it in the film!” to which Wiig replied, “Not this film.”
It was awkward but they laughed it out, and Chris even posted about his own lack of research.
Paul Rudd
Fact. Paul Rudd is older than Leonardo DiCaprio. So it’s fascinating to know now that Rudd’s wise words could have been responsible for one of the most famous movies ever.
Thank Rudd for his contribution to the film industry, with this possibly being the biggest.
Dakota Johnson
Dakota Johnson and her mother, actress Melanie Griffith, were on a live interview at the 2015 Academy Awards red carpet when things got awkward as the reported introduced Dakota as Melanie’s “little girl.”
The interviewer asked Griffith if she’s seen Dakota’s film, 50 Shades of Grey. Griffith said she didn’t, so Dakota said “maybe someday,” but her mother seemed really reluctant to watch it.
Dakota snapped, saying, “Alright! You don’t have to see it,” and she looked truly hurt.
Jessica Simpson
Ellen DeGeneres is a very talented host, but even she found it difficult to interview Jessica Simpson.
The singer and fashion designer began by saying she got an IUD, so “nothing’s gonna get in that uterus.”
Simpson then had a hard time answering simple questions coherently. Questions like what kind of things she and her husband like to do, and how long they’ve been married.
Even Ellen turned to the camera and just stared, unsure how to react to the ditzy display.
Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey has gained a reputation for being eccentric. He proved it by making E! news reporter Catt Sadler uncomfortable during a red carpet interview during the Harper’s Bazaar Icons Party.
She asked him simple questions, and the actor responded with strange answers. “There’s no meaning to any of this, so I wanted to find the most meaningless thing that I could come to and join,” he said. “I don’t believe in personalities, I don’t believe that you exist, but there is a wonderful fragrance in the air.”
All Sadler could do was stare at the camera.
Mila Kunis
On the Friends with Benefits press tour, Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake found themselves in Moscow for a press conference.
Kunis was born in Ukraine, but she knows Russian and was answering questions in her native language.
One reporter asked Justin a strange question, and she couldn’t help but stand up for Timberlake.
The reporter asked the former N’Sync member why he went from show business to film, and why it wasn’t enough.
Mila asked, “What would you rather have him do?” And then added, “Why are you here?”
She was implying that we get to choose what we want to do and that it’s our own business.
Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson, like other actresses, gets weird questions in interviews. In an interview for Avengers, she was asked if she was “able to wear undergarments.”
She replied, “You’re like the fifth person that’s asked me that,” then added, “Since when did people start asking each other in interviews about their underwear?”
The interviewer asked whether it was inappropriate, and Johansson let him know that, yes, asking whether someone is wearing undergarments or not is wrong.
She was nice about it, but the actress really stood up for herself.
Chelsea Handler
Comedian Chelsea Handler likes to speak her mind, and she certainly didn’t hold back in a 2014 interview with Piers Morgan.
She even told Morgan that he was a “terrible interviewer,” since he paid no attention to her during a commercial break.
He responded by saying that she just wasn’t keeping his attention,
“You have to pay attention to the guest you invited on your show,” Handler fired back. “It doesn’t matter how interesting I am, you signed up for this job.”
Serena Williams
Serena and Venus Williams had a match during the U.S Open tennis competition, so she ended up in a press conference where she was asked questions about the game.
One reporter thought to ask Serena why she wasn’t smiling and what’s wrong, maybe thinking she would discuss the game against her sister.
The tennis champ just said that it’s late at night, she’s tired, and honestly just doesn’t really want to be there.
Sebastian Stan
This one may not have “gone wrong”, but it became a flirting session with Sharon Stone and Avengers actor Sebastian Stan.
The actor has had a crush on Stone his entire life, so he took the opportunity to try and shamelessly pick her up, in his native language of Romanian.
James Corden was sitting there, yelling, “You’re a joke – You’re ridiculous!…I love it!”
Sharon then asked him if he would bite her neck (because Dracula), and he just went for it playfully.
Lauren Conrad
Beauty mogul and reality star Lauren Conrad was having a Q&A in 2014. Questions from fans were laid out for her by the producers.
One of those questions read, “What’s your favorite position?”, which made her feel really uncomfortable.
The businesswoman took a few seconds but came up with a clever answer – C.E.O.
Even the host loved it, but things were pretty uncomfortable for a while.
Dolly Parton
Barbara Walters was famous for her confrontational interviewing style, but her questions for Dolly Parton still shocked those who were watching.
She asked about the people Parton grew up around with, the way she dressed, and if Parton thought people thought she was a joke were enough to make anyone flustered and upset.
But Dolly took these questions in stride, turning the awkward and uncomfortable interview into one that flowed well.
Mark Wahlberg
Talk-show hosts shouldn’t let their guests drink backstage. Mark Wahlberg is the perfect example of why.
This 2013 interview on The Graham Norton Show had Sarah Silverman, Michael Fassbender, and an over-excited Wahlberg.
He would slur his speech and talk over Silverman and Fassbender, then he climbed onto Graham Norton’s lap and stroked his chest, almost giving him a “purple nurple.”
The audience loved every moment and so did Silverman.
Helena Bonham Carter
Helena Bonham Carter is known for playing eccentric and dark characters. Even her eccentric style extends to her fashion in life, as you can see in multiple interviews.
Rihanna was quick to point that out to Bonham Carter.
On The Graham Norton Show, the stars of* Ocean’s 8* were asked if they received invitations to the MET Gala.
When she said no, Rihanna blamed her fashion choices. Helena was a good sport about it though.
Kourtney Kardashian
An interview for Australian television had Kourtney Kardashian asked about her sister Kim, and how her family was coping after the Paris robbery incident.
Kourtney just froze then stared into the screen.
The hosts thought they lost connection or that Kourtney was ignoring the question.
But her eyes were blinking, so it was more likely that she didn’t know how to answer. After an awkward few seconds, Kourtney proceeded to answer.
Vin Diesel
Vin Diesel and Charlize Theron shared a kiss in Fast & Furious 8, and according to Diesel, was the “best kiss ever.”
But Charlize didn’t feel the same way.
She said Vin’s character stood there with lips “frozen like a dead fish,” and “I like a little bit more movement in my men.”
This quote was repeated by Ellen DeGeneres when Diesel appeared on her show, and he was shocked to hear Theron’s comments.
The actor stood up shouting, “What?!” and asked the audience, “Do I look like a dead fish?”
Tom Hardy
At the Legend Movie Press Conference, Tom Hardy received a strange question from a reporter.
The reporter said Hardy’s character was open about his sexuality, and asked if Hardy found it difficult for celebrities to talk about their own sexuality.
Tom asked the reporter if he was trying to ask him about his own sexuality, to which the guy said “sure.”
The actor replied with a resounding, “Why?”
When the reporter couldn’t answer, Tom said “thank you,” and moved on.
Robert Pattinson
Robert Pattinson shot to stardom thanks to the Twilight franchise. Everyone wanted an interview with thim, but reporters were warned not to ask questions about his co-star, Kristen Stewart.
The stars were rumored to be dating at the time, and wanted to keep it private.
Summit Entertainment wanted to keep it private as well, just in case it didn’t go well.
But Ryan Seacrest insisted on asking, so Robert’s publicist quickly ended the interview.
Bruce Willis
This reporter came into this interview excited, but Bruce Willis didn’t share the same feelings.
Either the actor was just playing around or he was just tired of his Red 2 press tour, because Willis had it in for the guy.
Willis even told him that what they’re doing isn’t acting, but just selling, so the fun part was over.
Talk about implying that he didn’t want to be there.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is a musical icon, but she needs to come up with new interview material. A compilation video went viral, showing Gaga repeating the same line in a few interviews.
She would thank her A Star Is Born co-star Bradley Cooper, saying, “There can be 100 people in a room and 99 of them don’t believe in you, but all it takes is one and it just changes your whole life.”
The sentiment is lovely, but it must have been awkward for Bradley to hear Gaga repeat it so many times.
Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande is vocal about women empowerment, and in this radio interview for KPWR, the singer was asked whether she’d rather give up using her phone, or stop wearing makeup.
She fired back at the host asking if that’s what he think girls have trouble with.
He asked if she could really go without her phone, to which Ariana replied “for many hours.”
The host didn’t stop and said, “Ladies, learn!” so Ariana snapped back, “Boys, learn!”
Cara Delevingne
Good Day Sacramento interviewed British actress Cara Delevingne, and they introduced her as “Carla.”
It was a bit awkward but the interview went along fine, until they told Cara that she seemed more excited in a previous interview.
Delevingne said that wasn’t the case, seemingly surprised by the rude remark.
The reporters said they’ll let her “take a little nap” and “maybe get a Red Bull.”
In Cara’s own defense, she remarked that some people just don’t get that British sense of humor.
Leonardo DiCaprio
In an interview for Leo’s movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, the interviewer didn’t seem interested about the new film, instead wanting to discuss the infamous ending of Titanic.
Leo and co-stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie were asked the question, could Leo have fit on that door in the end?
Brad and Margot were amused, but Leo said “no comment” with a tight smile.
The interviewer persisted, so Leo said “no comment” two more times. His co-workers saw his discomfort, so they continued to tease him.
Mariah Carey
Ellen has had some awkward interviews, but in 2008, she tried to get Mariah Carey to confess that she was pregnant.
She knew Mariah was pregnant and wasn’t ready to reveal it, but she put the singer on the spot by telling her to drink champagne and “toast to not being pregnant.”
The starlet was trying not to cry saying “I can’t believe you did this to me, Ellen.”
The worst thing part is that Carey had a miscarriage just weeks after the interview.
Jennifer Lawrence
At the press event for the 2016 Golden Globe awards, Lawrence embarrassed one particular reporter.
He was asking questions, reading them off his phone, so the actress told him to get off his phone. “You can’t live your whole life behind your phone, bro,” she said.
He laughed then asked Lawrence where she sees herself in regards to the Oscars, so she answered, “We’re at the Golden Globes. If you’d put your phone down, you’d know that.”
