It is always enjoyable to watch young people performing authentic folk dances. Dancing is an important part of many cultures and what makes every culture unique and often times, gets overlooked or forgotten as generations go by. We get caught up in the moment and with the increasing technology age, family traditions are quickly falling by the wayside.
But that is not the case with these two young ladies as they perform a stunning display of a folk dance that has the audience cheering and clapping along.
Two young girls step out on stage.
The scene opens in a dark auditorium. The only light is shining on stage where we see a banner and dimly lit purple curtains draping down from the ceiling. This is a concert for the Folk Choreographic Ensemble. Immediately, the bright and peppy music begins to play.
Then, from the left side of the stage, we see a young girl in a brightly colored dress step lightly onto the floor. She is wearing a yellow skirt with decorative flowers and a top with red sleeves. As she moves her arms up and down to the music, it causes waves to dance through the sleeves of her dress. Then we see another girl, from the left of stage appear in the same outfit, but with blue sleeves. Taking turns with their steps, they spin towards each other and dance to the middle of the stage where they meet.
They begin to dance as the audience claps along to the music.
The music has a very driving and rhythmic beat. The song, entitled, “Girlfriends”, is a very upbeat and folk-sounding melody. The girls hold their hands in the air as they take turns spinning each other around in circles.
They pick up the heels of their feet and step ever so lightly to the beat of the music. The audience finds the song and dance quite entertaining as well as they clap along, cheering the girls on. There is a lot of fancy footwork involved as well as the girls join both hands and spin around behind their backs as the point their toes and mirror each others movements. They then dance more complex moves as they step over each others legs as part of the dance.
While some folk dances live on, they are overall declining.
In a world where technology and online social interactions are the new normal, it can be sometimes hard to remember what it used to be like back in the day. Not that long ago, people used to gather in public places and dance together in celebration or in honor of an event.
There are still some cultures hanging tightly to their traditions and some are better off for it. These talented young girls are a living reminder of the days now gone. May their performance help us remember the traditions that are important to us.
