One of the biggest viral dance crazes of 2019 was the Git Up Challenge. It’s based on singer Blanco Brown’s hit track “The Git Up”. The song itself is a smooth mix of country and hip hop sounds, but the dance is what most people are really excited about.

It combines both traditional country and modern dance genres into a smooth-flowing performance.

Over the course of the year, thousands of people took to the Internet to join in on the challenge. There were too many great performances to count. However, one of our favorites, by far, was the version recorded by two members of the Alcoa Police Department.

It was made to celebrate 100 years of excellent work by the department in the city of Alcoa, Tennessee.

They released it on the 4th of July — a day notorious for having fun, celebrating with friends, and taking a much-needed break from the day to day grind.

The officers parked their squad cars next to each other as a backdrop, switched on the police lights, and stepped out onto the grass to do their hilarious Git Up Challenge. They queued the music and began swaying from the left to the right, taking a few steps in each direction, and then spinning back around.

“Gon’ and do the 2 step then cowboy boogie
Grab your sweetheart and spin out with ’em,” the lyrics of the song read.

According to Blanco Brown, there are four basic steps involved in the Git Up dance.

The first step is the Cowboy Boogie. You do a few paces to the side and a stomp. Next comes the Hoedown. You alternate kicking your legs out to the side four times.

The third step is the Butterfly. You swerve your knees in and out while doing the same thing with your hands.

“You got to have fun with it,” explains Brown.

Lastly, is the most important part of the dance — the Two-Step.

It is hard to describe exactly, but it involves stepping forward and back while twisting your legs at the same time. Once you see the video for yourself, you’ll understand.

“Do the hoedown and get into it
Take it to the left now and dip with it
Gon’ throw down take a sip with it
And lean back put your hips in it,” the lyrics continue.

Many people think of police officers as very serious people. However, the Alcoa Police Department video proves that there is a lot of fun to be had on the job as well.

Both of the officers have an amazing sense of humor and we have to give them credit where credit is due.

While they aren’t going to be winning any dance talent competitions any time soon, it’s great that they were willing to get a little bit silly and put themselves out there like that. It takes a lot of confidence to upload a goofy dance performance online for the world to see.

Since the video was made in July, it has been viewed almost 1.5 million times. We love how it humanizes the police officers, allowing us to see them as normal people who can let their hair down occasionally just like the rest of us.

However, shortly after the video was finished, the two of them had to get back to work. Someone has to keep the streets safe. Although, we bet the criminals and public won’t be looking at these officers in the same light ever again.
