If you’re asking yourself what we’re talking about, you came to the right place. 2CELLOS, a Slovenian/Croatian cellist duo, put on a thrilling show that will move you from your seat. Sitting still is not an option—just look at the audience enjoying Nirvana’s hit on those big chordophones. 2 CELLOS became insanely popular after their cover of MJ’s “Smooth Criminal” became a huge hit on YouTube.
If you don’t remember that sensational cello rendition, here it is—it reminds you of why the whole world began looking at the cello with different eyes. The cover was uploaded in 2011 and it reached over three million views in the first two weeks. Ten years later, and it has ten times more!
Anyway, 2CELLOS is a duo of two classically trained cellists, Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser.
They form an interesting Croatian-Slovenian mix who performs all across the globe.
The duo’s released five albums and the world knows them best as talented musicians who can take any pop or rock song and turn it into a “cello gem.” Luka and Stjepan explain that they choose songs “that can be arranged as covers playable on just two cellos.”
Elton John spotted their talent and invited the duo on a 2011 summer tour with him.
A successful five-year-long collaboration came out of it, because 2CELLOS appeared in Elton John’s 2010 “The Million Dollar Piano” concert movie.
Elton didn’t hold back with his compliments:
“I can’t remember seeing anything as exciting as them since I saw Jimi Hendrix live back in the 60s.”
As much as they love covering popular rock songs, both Luka and Stjepan also like to perform with the orchestra. “We will not abandon playing classical music,” says Luka. Their dream is to, one day, go on a tour with a classical and a temporary orchestra.
Imagine that! We can’t wait to hear the luxurious sound of those performances.
It doesn’t hurt to mention that more than five million people are subscribed to their YouTube channel, and they’ve garnered over half a million followers on Instagram.
“Let there be a cello,” they say, and after hearing them out, we can only nod affirmatively.

As an opening act on the 2CELLOS concert at Sidney Opera House in 2018, a talented Croatian drummer Dušan Kranjc has had his 15 minutes of fame.
For a couple of minutes, his drumming amazed everyone, and we were enthusiastic about him jumping from one drum to another, making it look as if he has ten hands at least.
He surely warmed up the crowd.
Sidney Symphony Orchestra and 2 CELLOS together resulted in a wholesome performance worthy of hundreds of replays. The conductor was none other than one of Australia’s most versatile conductors and musical entertainers, Guy Noble.
From the first chord one, the familiar sound of Nirvana’s 1991 most recognizable song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
People in the audience are sitting in their seats, but everyone is moving, clapping their hands, smiling and enjoying the exciting mix.
We bet no one expected a cello arrangement this catchy!
We couldn’t resist—it simply makes you stand up and dance.
We know it’s a common courtesy to stay seated in the venue, but such contagious sound makes it incredibly hard.
