A piece of soothing music paired with the aesthetic view of nature is enough to calm you to the bones.
If you are looking for a way to relax, then this might just be the perfect music video for you. As it turns out, a group of music archivists came across this old man somewhere in a Turkish village.
It all started this group of friends who were chronicling folk music from the rich musical culture from Turkey, Persia, and the surrounding areas.
They happened to meet an old man who also happened to know a Turkish folk song.
So, they decided to film the man as he did his rendition and posted the clip on YouTube which racked up an impressive four million views. As he sat on a tree stump, this man plays a mesmerizing song with his lute.
In all, it’s just another day on Özgür Baba’s humble abode.
You can see a bunch of chickens roaming around, and his cat sleeping on a log. In his hand is a Cura, a six-stringed Turkish lute which is a member of the stringed instrument family called the bağlama. He plucks its strings, and it produces a tune which is sorrowful, yet pleasantly refreshing. Before long, the scenic view and the beautiful nature around him were perfectly accompanied by the instrument’s high pitch.
The raw instrumental went on for about four minutes before reaching the song’s verses, all with long instrumental intervals in between the verses.
Although, even hearing just the sound of the lute was enough to take your mind to many places.
You will have a nostalgic feeling or even imagine that you are in a medieval world when you hear the music.
The lyrics were spoken in old Turkish language, and it seemed like it came from Yunus Emre, a Turkish poet and a Sufi mystic who contributed quite a lot in Turkish culture and their literature.
Baba set up the perfect mood to tell the story in the form of music.
The poem was called “Dertli Dolap,” or “Benim Adim Dertli Dolap” in full which is translated as, “Endless Trouble is my Name.”
There are sources in which they try to decipher the poem’s message. Some say that it speaks of the complicated nature of life, the relationship between humans and their creator, and life’s troubles. However, some sources suggested that it was about a tree that was cut down to be turned into a cupboard. This poem has a thousand interpretations!
Emre’s compositions are just like that—although they seem easy to understand on the surface, they are quite deceptive when you travel into their depths.
They are mystical and are a perfect catalyst to make yourself transcend to another realm.
As the video circulated the internet, it even caught the attention of a famous musician.
Colin H. van Eeckhout, frontman of the Belgian post-doom metal band Amenra, was impressed with Baba’s rendition.
Eeckhout even reached out to Baba to invite him on a musical tour!
It was fantastic that Baba was able to show the world the ancient Turkish culture.
Still, there’s big thanks due to the band who gave him a chance to let his music be heard. This is true musicianship right here!
Congratulations to him on all his exposure! Be sure to watch the whole performance in the link below:
