Modern tap is a style of dance that has developed from many styles of ethnic dance from around the world. Mostly reminiscent of African and Irish styles, but also influenced by dutch and other European dance styles, it is now mostly associated with its rise to popularity in conjunction with Jazz music in the early 1900’s.
Although its origins are much older than the Vaudeville era, the performance style has continued into the modern iterations of tap dance.
The R+P School of dance in Brno, Czech Republic are top of the line talent when it comes to tap.
Young and old, members of this dance school compete fiercely on the international stage. The school specializes in both street dance and tap dance, and they regularly compete in world-wide competitions.
This performance by three talented young tappers during the World Tap Dance Championship is enough to make you want to get up and tap as well!
They begin their performance with cutesy poses, but don’t get it twisted, these girls are here to compete! Tap dance takes not just a boatload of coordination, but a high level of fitness. It’s a percussive style of dance, meaning that the dancers not only have to look good, but have to sound good too. They must keep perfect rhythm as well as nail all other moves.
And these girls hit the stage (literally) with admirable gusto.
I shudder to think how much rehearsal it took these girls to reach the level of skill they have. They make their school proud, performing and competing for not just the legacy of their dance school, but representing their whole country.
And even if you find tap dance boring, their other moves will leave you speechless.
With quirky and fun choreography, these girls take an old style of dance and breathe new life into it. Not that tap dance isn’t dazzling in its own right, but with a few extra fun moves their routine as a whole is highly enjoyable for appreciators of all genres of dance.
Their performance as a whole is very polished.
With their adorable outfits, the checked red and white skirts, long white socks and black waist coats, the routine is delightfully stylish. As they perform each of the girls gets a moment in the spotlight, and each shines brightly when they get the chance.
And they also dazzle with some pretty snazzy moves!
At one point the girls all slide across the stage, much like Tom Cruise famously did in the film”Risky Business”. I don’t think there’s anything risky about these girls doing it however, as it all seems to be second nature to these very talented young dancers.
And with some more cutesy choreography, they strike their final finishing poses.
I’m sure their choreographer, parents and dance teachers must have been very proud of these young yet skillful dancers. If at this age they already have such talent, they will have long and fruitful dancing careers ahead of them.
