Any country music fan knows about the genre’s royal couple: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

Unless you’ve lived under a rock, the two country music legends made history when they tied the knot after years of dominating the country music scene.

Though it does make you wonder how it all started.

How did Tim McGraw and Faith Hill become the sweet couple they are today?

Well, we can go back and look.

It actually began in 1994. McGraw was then dating Kristine Donahue, and Hill was engaged to someone herself: Scott Hendricks.

Not long after, Hill’s marriage would end – but not for any dramatic reason.

She felt like married life wasn’t suiting her.

Hill compared herself to a flower trying to bud, and the constraints of marriage conflicted with who she wanted to be at the time.

Then, Hill would later go on to tour alongside McGraw for his Spontaneous Combustion tour that took place in 1996.

This is where the pieces all fell into place. “We were young and silly and goo-goo-eyed in love,” said McGraw.

They were both single at the time after leaving their previous partners.

McGraw sported a mullet at the time that he’s not the proudest of now, though Hill says she liked it quite a bit.

The feelings got even stronger after touring together for a while until Tim began considering proposing to her.

Of all places, it was at a country music festival where Mr. McGraw cracked from the feelings and felt like asking the golden question.

They originally joked about getting married initially, but McGraw’s feelings drove him to think, “Well, that’s not such a bad idea.”

So he got down on his knees and asked her.

Pleasantly shocked, Hill told him, “We’re at a country music festival in a trailer house, and you’re asking me to marry you?”

As much as she poked fun at how out-of-place it was, Hill didn’t want to say no.

After the event was over, Hill left a message for McGraw on one of the mirrors inside the trailers.

It read “Yes, I’m gonna be your wife” in marker, and she left lipstick kisses on it to drive the point home.

They would go on to wed on October 6, 1996.

After months of dating and being madly in love, the pair made it official.

They also made a name for themselves as country music royalty.

Not long after, they revealed they were expecting a child – and this would only be the first of 3 kids they would have.

The pair would go on to have a second child and then a third.

Going from performing on stages to changing diapers probably wasn’t easy to adjust to, but neither is most of married life.

You both work hard to keep love and marriage, and they did great at that.

Over 20 years later, the pair are still just as madly in love as ever.
