Although music has been around throughout history, creative artists always find new and unique ways to express themselves.

For those who are used to hearing music on the radio, it may mean something more specific. We can think of popular genres like country, hip-hop, R&B and pop. Along with that, we may think of specific sounds. In America, we’re used to hearing guitars, drums, bass guitars and a few other instruments. Because of the popularity of these instruments and tropes, we’re used to music that uses some (or all) of these components.

Still, this video is an entirely different style of music which is frankly incredible.

Those with more esoteric tastes in music may be familiar with throat singing.

Throat singing is a unique style which comes out of Mongolia, Siberia and Russia. The music sounds guttural and with a deeper tone, though it also has another incredible feature. Those who master this style can use their voice to hit two notes at the same time. If this doesn’t sound impressive, let’s be more clear: that’s two notes in entirely different octaves!

The clip shows performer Natascha Nikeprelevic performing “Towards the Light” using this special technique.

As the video starts, Nikeprelevic begins by establishing a base tone before adding a much higher overtone on top of it—which continues throughout the video. Although the melody she sings is rich and contaiens harmonies, a closer listen makes it a little clearer what’s actually going on. The base note that she sings actually stays more or less the same the entire time. The only part that changes is the higher harmonic note, over which she shows incredible control!

So far, the clip has been shared more than 100,000 times on Facebook—and has amassed some 4.5 million views.

For those of us who usually just put on the radio or the most recent Spotify playlist, Nikeprelevic’s performance is a reminder that the world of music is much broader than we might think. People have enjoyed music throughout history and for those of us who only listen to popular and highly-produced music, we may fail to understand why it is so important to us. As Nikeprelevic’s performance shows, mastering our voices to create these amazing sounds makes it all start to seem otherworldly. For some, this can almost be a spiritual experience.
