Dance competitions are usually very exciting.
And when you mix a little game in the middle of all, you get a complete event boost that keeps everyone in the audience on the edge of their seats.
This is what happens when organizers get a little creative.
You won’t believe this impromptu improvisation dance to “Macarena.” It’s incredible!
“Macarena” is a Spanish dance song by Los del Río.
It was released in 1993 and became an absolute international hit and dance craze throughout the 1990s. We think everyone knows the famous dance and it’s quite hard to picture any other moves with this song. However, this swing dance competition in Budapest brought a big surprise to the familiar song.
For those who don’t know, the competition in Budapest unites the best swing dancers across Hungary.
It was held in the Hotel Intercontinental in Budapest. As the clip begins, the audience is all around the stage and the judge randomly picks two papers out of a hat. Dancers’ names are written on those pieces of paper, and they have to dance in pairs after being picked out. The game is called “stick or twist.”
After pairing a dance couple, the judges play a song for them and they have to choose if they’ll stick to the song or switch it.
Whatever the choice they make, the duo has to dance swing improvisation to the song. Sounds hard, right?
Even so, Emeline and Jordan did an amazing job!
The judge first picked Jordan Frisbee and then Emeline Rochefeuille was chosen to dance with him.
The first song was described as something that “sounds like Prince.” The dancing couple didn’t like the rhythm, so they switched the song. Then you hear “Macarena” and the audience goes crazy! There is enormous applause and everyone screams at them to take the song.
They eventually stick with it and start to dance.
You would expect the familiar moves, but they weren’t allowed to do so. If you ever wondered if anyone can dance swing to “Macarena,” the answer is yes! These two are incredibly original, and they end up making an excellent and humorous choreography together.
You are about to see an impressive, contemporary interpretation of a song that’s over 20 years old.
Emeline and Jordan made a beautiful, graceful and very funny routine. The crowd screamed and laughed—we bet it made everyone’s day!
As professional dancers, Em and Jordan both have longtime dance partners.
The pair dances together in the video, but they actually perform with other people.
Jordan’s dance partner is Tatiana Mollmann. They’ve danced together since 2000 and have won the US Open Swing competition 13 times. They are one of the most celebrated dancing couples in West Coast Swing.
Emeline usually dances with Jakub Jakoubek.
Both are originally from the Czech Republic, and they both started with ballroom dancing. Emeline also lived in France, and that’s where she trained dancing with Maxence Martin. Today, Emeline is a dance teacher, a DJ and a photographer.
We can’t deny that Emeline and Jordan have great chemistry together!
They’re light on their feet and they seem like they’re floating through the air. We are so glad that they got to express their talents together. Maybe this should be a good practice worldwide to mix dancers up a bit and let them experiment.
The idea of swing dancing to any random song is extraordinary.
Imagine being so confident and skilled to throw out a freestyle like this one! We’re going to be watching this again and again.
