No matter how old or talented you are, there are some songs that are particularly imposing to sing at an audition.
Though we all have our own personal answers to that question, there are a handful of songs that are universally recognized as difficult like this.
By and large, we all agree that virtually any big ballad sung by Celine Dion is off limits. Other no-no’s include any song by Mariah Carey that has whistle tones in it… and some rock ballads like “Dream On” by Aerosmith also fit this description.
Still, maybe the king of these songs is “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston.
Despite all that, however, one singer had the guts to take it on for an audience—and she was so young!
The performance we’re talking about happened on The Voice Kids in 2013. Like the adult version of the show, it began with all the judges’ backs turned to the stage as the contestant steps out to sing.
After a moment of silence, some backing music plays and the singer starts to perform. Almost immediately, the judges recognize the song—and they know just how hard it will be to sing.
Fortunately, the teen singer is already nailing it!
After just a few seconds, she already has two of the judges turned around.
Although it’s just the first few lyrics of the song, everybody in the crowd already knows that they’re hearing something incredible. Moments later, the third judge hits the buzzer and spins around as well!
Before she even gets to the first chorus, the crowd is on their feet to give the singer a standing ovation! As the song goes on, it gets harder and harder to sing. When it comes to the key change, the singer hits it flawlessly!
Needless to say, nobody in the crowd can even believe what they’re hearing!
After it’s all over, one of the judges keeps hitting his buzzer again and again just to emphasize how good the performance was.
When that’s done, the judges get to know the incredible singer. Her name is Laura and she is only 13 years old! After that, the judges bring her over to the judges’ table and sit her down in one of the chairs.
As they start talking to her, they ask (in German) if she knows that she just sang “the forbidden song.” As they go on to explain, the song is basically off-limits because it’s nearly impossible to sing well.
Despite all that, they say, Laura was able to do a perfect rendition of it!
Every one of the judges says that they’re nearly speechless.
When it’s all over, all of the judges are trying to get Laura on their team—and of the judges even says Laura should be their teacher! When it’s all done, Laura makes her decision—and shares a big hug with her new vocal coach.
Although it’s always inspiring and incredible to watch children have such impressive talents, Laura’s performance of a nearly impossible song to sing is something else entirely.
Congratulations to Laura on her truly breathtaking performance! Watch the full thing in the clip below:
