The “Shag’ is a six-count style of swing dance, usually done to beach music. It is thought to have originated in South Carolina, and has bee around since the 1940’s.
Like most styles of swing dance, it is high energy, and a bucketload of fun.
Not to be confused with shag carpet, the shag bird, or other things that use the name “shag”, this is style of dance may seem familiar, but is unique in its own right.
And two young dancers have been making waves in the competitions they’ve been competing in.
Young Billy West and Brooke Farrior are two highly talented dancers who have flooded the internet with videos of their spectacular exploits in shag competitions.
Even in 2020, they’ve been sweeping competitions!
Competing in the 37th annual shag dance championships was a skip in the park for these two highly talented and ambitions dancers.
They won the junior division for the 2020 Nationals, in the only way they know how; with a little determination, and a whole lotta skill!
As always, they take their place center stage with great big smiles on their faces.
Throughout every competition the chemistry between these two dancers is electric, and this one is no different. They both have a zeal and passion for dancing which makes you want to get up and do it yourself!
They are both able to dance with precision and excellent timing.
One of the great things about shag dance is just how dang fun it is to watch. It must be even more fun to dance if you can do it, going off of how these junior dancers seem to be living their best lives.
It’s not just fancy footwork with shag, but many fun twists and turns…literally!
Not to mention gravity-defying dips and drops!
Billy has some pretty fancy moves up his…pant legs? What do you say when someone uses their legs instead of their arms?
With low-bouncing leg-moves that would make a Cossack blush, Billy dazzles the crowd with his moves but more importantly- the judges!
Including this typical but impressive shag move.
Billy crouches low, with his legs crossed, and rocks back and forth between his feet in a way that seems like a blend between a Russian Cossack dance and a 1950’s “twist”. It’s as if the Beach boys were in fact from Moscow…and competed in junior dance competitions.
And let’s not forget how wonderfully talented Brooke is as well!
She’s a highly competent performer and it’s clear that her fancy footwork is part of what makes these two such formidable competitors in the dance arena.
She steps with supreme confidence and moves around the stage with grace and expertise.
When the performance is over, they embrace tightly. Whether these two were friends before they began dancing together, or if they have grown closer because of their dancing together, they clearly have a bind which fortifies their performances and coheres them on the stage.
