Imagine one moment you’re reading a magazine or newspaper in the lobby of a hospital, and the next moment a woman sits down to a giant central harp and begins to play.

The music is soft and it moves about and filters throughout the building—it’s serene and enjoyable.

Yet all of a sudden she’s joined by a violin and a cello. And then from the next floor above, a few more people on brass horns followed up by a clarinet.

Within moments, a veritable orchestra begins to materialize in front of you.

Patients and their families were treated to a very surprising performance from 40 students of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

In 2013, they offered up a symphony and gave the concept of a flash mob a classical spin. As they performed Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz of the Flowers,” doctors, patients and passersby alike all joined in on the fun.

Hospitals are common for heartwarming acts of kindness. Flashmobs offer genuine entertainment that tends to inspire, and surprise routines work to lift people’s spirits in trying and difficult times. Organized mobs of song and dance have the ability to make people feel, think, and wonder. Experts believe that depression can inhibit the body’s natural ability to heal itself. So, why not a little joy?

Joy is just what these forty orchestra students brought with them in their hospitalized performance from the Nutcracker Suite.

The students assembled on behalf of Good Deeds Day, an annual event that originated in Israel in 2007, which now takes place in over 50 countries worldwide. Volunteers who support this day reach out with kind acts to those that are vulnerable and less fortunate.

Philanthropist Shari Arison organized the day to help raise social awareness. She began with just 7,000 volunteers, but it has now swelled to millions yearly.

From her website:

Good Deeds Day is a global annual tradition of good, calling everyone to come out together and give of themselves for the benefit of others and the planet. People can unite around good. Just imagine the impact! If every person does something to make a difference, and communities, organizations, and corporations give of their time and skill to help others, lives will be improved, and our world will be a better one.”

It’s truly amazing what we can accomplish together, and the students from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance gave the hospital the biggest treat!

Slowly, one by one, piece by piece, they assemble across the floor and walkways of the hospital.

Residents take sheer delight in the warmth of the familiar tune. They gather around with smiles, wonder and amazement. Some sway their head to the notes.

Soon enough, the orchestra is accompanied by a ballerina! She makes the performance something special.

She takes her time, moving her body elegantly to the music. The ballerina even reaches out to touch a few awe-struck children. Most importantly, she inspires!

Before you know it, other people are joining her on the “dance-floor.”

A couple begins to waltz with one another.

The ballerina takes another audience member and begins to twirl her around. The sense of peace and joy is high! The orchestra eventually concludes to a loud round of applause—their grace realized and appreciated.
