As you may already know, Gloria Fallon, mother of television host Jimmy Fallon, has passed away recently due to an undisclosed illness. Jimmy Fallon canceled the tapings of The Tonight Show on NBC for a week and gave a heartwarming tribute to his mother in his return episode one week later.
“Guys, as some of you know, my mother passed away recently and I canceled our shows last week to be with my family and make arrangements. She was the best audience, she was the one I was always trying to make laugh, she was such a fan of the show and everything I did…”
An emotional Jimmy then proceeded to tell a childhood story about his mother.
“When we were little, my mom would walk us to the store with my sister, and we would hold hands, you know. She would squeeze my hands three times and say ‘I love you’ and I would squeeze back ‘I love you too.’ Last week I was in the hospital and I saw her and grabbed her arm, and squeezed ‘I Love You.’ And I just knew we were in trouble.”
“But I feel so grateful to be able to do this every single night and I’m very appreciative of all the support of all of you that my family received over the past week. We’re going to continue to work really hard to bring some light and some laughter into the world. Mom, I’ll never stop trying to make you laugh. I love you.”
Mike DiCenzo, a producer for The Tonight Show, revealed that the entire team wanted to do something special for Jimmy’s first show back and they asked Taylor Swift if she would like to perform – she instantly said yes.
Taylor Swift performed a brand new song from her new album ‘Reputation’, called ‘New Year’s Day’. The new song is stunning and Taylor’s singing performance is absolutely brilliant, but an incredible moment was yet to come.
In the middle of the song, Taylor sang the following lyrics:
“You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi
I can tell that it’s gonna be a long road”
Everyone was surprised, as the lyrics of the song matched perfectly with the story that Jimmy told earlier that night about their tradition to give each other three squeezes. Mike recalls that everyone in the audience started to become emotional.
After Taylor’s beautiful performance, she and Jimmy quickly embraced each other in what was a very emotional and heartfelt moment.
