If you’re a music lover, YouTube is probably one of your favorite things in the world.
For those looking to discover something new, YouTube provides endless possibilities for discovering new music and new talent.
All you have to do is type in one artist or one song that you’re particularly fond of and YouTube’s algorithm will provide countless other suggestions of great videos. Though this is a great thing for people who love listening to music, it’s also a great thing for the artists as well.
And as just one example, consider this performance by Tash Sultana.
For those who don’t know, Tash Sultana is an Australian singer-songwriter who has made a name on the internet and as a busker.
Sultana was born in 1995 and bills as a “one-person band.” In all, Sultana plays many different instruments and takes on all kinds of different roles in music—including guitar, bass, piano, keyboards, trumpet, drums, mandolin and so much more!
In 2016, Sultana released an EP called Notion which built up enough momentum to help them tour around the world.
And the clip we’re talking about today is a live performance posted from June 2018.
The performance took place at California Roots festival.
The song Sultana performs is “Jungle,” an original alternative rock song that’s influenced by many different genres. Though it has a rock feel to it, it also draws on reggae and electronic influences as well.
From the beginning, Sultana addresses the audience and says that it will be the last song. After that, they start playing guitar and the crowd roars with applause!
Still, the performance only gets better from there.
At first, Sultana plays a simple guitar line to build the first part of the melody.
From that part onward, Sultana adds more guitar layers on top of it again and again until the whole crowd is swaying. After that, the guitar lines get fed into a synthesizer and a syncopator so that Sultana can control them all as one wave of sound!
After singing the first verse, Sultana even takes time out to build the music up and toy with the audience so they know how the music is being made.
With that, everyone in the audience roars with applause yet again!
After that first wall of sound, Sultana turns the automation off and comes back and starts singing to the crowd again.
Although rock and psychedelic music has largely fallen out of fashion in recent years, this song still feels contemporary while drawing upon older musical styles and updating them.
Towards the end, Sultana hits a long guitar solo and feeds it through the electronics for an entirely new sound! Because the song is more than 11 minutes long, there’s more than enough time to experiment and stretch out all the sounds!
And there are still plenty of musical surprises in the second half as well.
When the song is finally over, the crowd gives Sultana a huge round of applause.
Since the clip was posted, it has earned itself more than 10 million views!
Even if rock music that leads with the guitar isn’t as popular as it once was, it’s clear that artists like Sultana are still blazing a path and keeping the spirit alive.
Congratulations to Tash Sultana on all their success—and on an incredible performance! Be sure to watch the whole thing in the link below:
