Having a sister is like having a built-in hype man! Or woman, to be exact.
For 17-year-old Taryn Coccia, she knew that she wanted to bring her older sister Payton Taylor along with her to her American Idol audition.
Taryn is a singer that mainly sings pop and R&B music, while her sister plays guitar and also sings country music.
The two sisters packed up from their home in New Jersey and moved to Nashville, Tennessee to help Taryn pursue her dreams when she was just 13 years old.
American Idol host Ryan Seacrest interviewed the sisters prior to Taryn’s audition and was impressed that Payton would forgo auditioning herself and instead was there to support her sister.
“Having my sister here is a feeling like no other. She always helps with my nerves because I know I have my best friend right beside me.”
The sisters’ plan for the audition was to let Tayrn sing, while Payton said she was going to just step back and let her sister shine.
Right before they walked into the audition, Payton stopped her sister to give her a pep talk and to remind her just how proud she is of her.
Taryn’s day job is working as a singer in the Nashville International Airport. It sounds like a fancy job, but she has to go through the security line every day just to get to work.
For her audition, Taryn picked the song “Masterpiece” by Jessie J, for which she sang and her sister Payton played the guitar.
She got through her planned audition and right after Taryn was done singing, Katy Perry turned to Lionel Richie and started whispering.
Luke Bryan threw his hands up in the air and claimed that Katy and Lionel have never whispered to each other so far during this season of the show.
What Katy was asking Lionel was if the other girl (Payton) sang too. Just as Luke Bryan was saying that Katy and Lionel leave him out of everything, Katy whispered to Lionel:
“She kind of looks like a rockstar.”
Lionel then asked Payton is she sings and if she has sung with Taryn already. Katy explained that the reason she became a singer is that her older sister was a singer first.
Lionel then asked Payton:
“This is American Idol and we’re here, Payton would it be okay to mess up the equation here?”
To which she told him she would be open to singing, but she wanted to do something with her sister. Before she could sing with her sister, Katy wanted to hear what Payton had one her own.
Payton decided to sing “Angel From Montgomery” by John Prine for the judges and they absolutely loved it.
All of the judges wanted to know if the siblings had any more sisters or brothers. It seems the talent runs in the family!
This audition might be a warning to anyone who is considering bringing a sibling along with them to rethink that choice.
Payton immediately was awarded a Golden Ticket to Hollywood, whereas it took some second thinking from the judges on whether or not Taryn should get the chance.
Thankfully, both sisters are headed to Hollywood! Which of these sisters do you think has the better voice?
