It’s hard to forget someone with a name like Tara Bloch-Vere.
Once you here Tara sing, you’ll definitely remember her.
She’s not your typical soft tone, siren type singer.
Hers is a low, rumbling, powerful voice that rises to a strong, solid tone.
On The Voice Norway, Tara grabs everyone’s attention with her unique style.
She sings Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence”, a song now known all over the world thanks to a resurgence and many covers.
Perhaps, the song’s most popular cover is by the rock band Disturbed.
Paul Simon wrote the song over a span of several months in 19963 and 1964.
The song was recorded for the album “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.” which was released on October 19, 1964.
The album was a commercial failure.
Simon and Garfunkel disbanded and went their own ways up until 1965 when the song began playing on the radio, leading to Tom Wilson, the song’s producer, to remix the track.
Paul and Art had no idea, but they soon reunited and got back in the studio.]
The rest is history.
The classic folk rock song was a hit in Australia, Austria, West Germany, Japan and the Netherlands before making it to other countries.
Disturbed’s drummer, Mike Wengren, came up with the idea of covering “The Sound of Silence.”
Lead singer David Draiman said Wengren’s idea came from his childhood wherein the family would play the song while the kids did their chores.
The band knew they had to go lighter on “The Sound of Silence.”
Draiman was not unfamiliar with the style he had to adopt.
He was trained as a canto, the same canto that leads prayers in Jewish congregations.
If you are familiar with Disturbed’s songs, you’ll understand why.
Apparently, Tara is very familiar.
Audiences often expect female singers to perform like, well, most female artists.
But Tara went on full rock mode here, borderline shouting while still maintaining the song’s melody.
And for some reason, she pulled it off!
See, she was so good, even this viewer had to agree. He says,
“I love that she did Disturbed’s version rather than Simon & Garfunkel’s. Never heard a female vocalist cover it before and she did an awesome job! Packed with emotion.”
It’s a song perfect for today’s world as Simon and Garfunkel put it,
“This is a song about the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other.”
Tara is shouting but is the message coming across?
The irony of a song called “The Sound of Silence” that needs to be sang at the top of one’s voice so people will listen. And hopefully think.
Tara’s style certainly puts her name in conversations among producers and artists
. It’s not often the world hears a lovely lady sing the way she just did. But we did need this.
