Line dancing is not just for country music.
People can line dance to anything they want even if it’s to hit songs from the late 1960s.
A group of women decided to put together a line dancing routine to the sounds of 1969’s “Sugar, Sugar” by the Archies and a video of their performance has gone viral online.
Line dancing through history
Line dancing really hit its peak popularity in the 1980s and 1990s.
If you were around during that time, you might remember everyone line dancing to “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus, now better known as Miley’s dad.
The idea of line dancing is pretty simple: A group of people forms a line and dance in synchronization with others in said line.
It was developed in the 1800s and evolved from folk dancing.
Line dancing to The Archies
The Archies were the band that performed music for the hit Saturday morning cartoon show, The Archie Show.
Characters from the show were based on the popular comic series and included Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Moose, and the rest of the gang.
The Archies musical group was never shown on television, but their songs were a featured part of the show.
The Archie Comics franchise
The Archie Comics were first developed in 1939 and have stood the test of time.
Even today, the characters from the popular television series Riverdale are based on this successful franchise.
The comic series also produced several spinoffs, some of which have become quite successful on their own.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch is a perfect example of this.
What is the song “Sugar, Sugar” about?
The Archie Show was aimed at kids and as such so was the music developed for the show.
Andy Kim and Jeff Barry wrote the song and based it on something they know kids like, i.e. candy!
Kim had the following to say to Songfacts about the hit single.
“It wasn’t written for anything other than to satisfy a Saturday morning animated show. ‘Sugar, Sugar’ was one of those songs that I kept humming. I kept loving it. It would not leave me. And with the magical mind of Jeff Barry, a great record was made.”
Line dancing to “Sugar, Sugar”
While the song doesn’t sound like one you would typically line dance to, these ladies put together a mesmerizing performance.
It really is a great song. One that has the ability to awaken the little child within.
It was written to activate that childlike sense of wonder we all have.
While children live their life based on that spirit, adults often suppress it.
It’s there, however, and sometimes it takes music and dance to bring it out.
