A one-man band is a musician who plays several instruments simultaneously using their hands, feet, limbs or various original techniques.
These entertainers also often sing when they perform.
Knowing how challenging it is to learn to play one instrument right, it’s very impressive when someone juggles between instruments as if it was no big deal.
That’s why this video is so impressive—today, we bring to you a street-performing one-man-band who lives on a sailboat.
Captain Bots, better known as El Hombre Orquesta, is one very specific musician who lives on a sailboat named Mahala and travels around the world at his speed.
When the ship docks, Bots is a busker, and his performances have graced the streets of many cities across the globe. His lifestyle is part of a much larger project called Honky Tonk Sail, which takes pride in putting hot jazz on the high seas.
This is an open project that unites New Orleans traditional jazz with sailing and has already hosted many international musicians that keep changing.
It’s interesting to know that Captain Bots’ nickname El Hombre Orquesta means “one-man-band” in Spanish, and he is one of the organizers of this project. The man loves jazz and has found a perfect way to combine it with traveling. From this point of view, he seems to be living life.
El Hombre Orquesta plays trumpet, trombone, tuba, guitar, washboard and drums.
It’s not hard to see that we’re talking about a very talented man who has mastered six different instruments—but he also sings.
Captain Bots is a trumpeter of the Old Fish Jazz Band whose members were inspired by Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, King Oliver, Johnny Dods and many others. The band plays exclusively jazz, and so does El Hombre Orquesta.
The video was published on the band’s official YouTube channel with 14,300 subscribers, and it portrays a unique jazz lover playing in the street with all his instruments around him.
He’s enjoying himself in Santa Cruz de La Palma on Canary Island. The song we’re hearing is “Wake Up, Sinners” by The Dirt Daubers.
It’s an amazing show put on by a man who’s used to jamming by himself.
He does it effortlessly, though it takes a lot of skill to switch between those brass instruments with such ease. It makes his performance ten times more amazing! Of course, none of it would be possible without a loop station.
The audience is attracted to this performance, and you can hear people commenting he’s good and talented.
They talk in Spanish, but you can feel a lot of excitement in their voices. They’re happy to be listening to him. The whole time he’s sitting on a small chair, surrounded by his instruments, in front of some building with a large door. We love the fact that he’s casually dressed and barefoot. It seems as if he wants to soak in as much of his surroundings as possible.
As it turns out, his newest album is already available in digital form.
El Hombre Orquesta has released his new album Just Another Day At The Office.
If you’re inclined to know more about his music, definitely check him out online. This fellow has come a long way since he performed his first concerts in 2013. We were impressed to see someone delivering a full jazz concert on his own. The audience loves it too, and the video accumulated more than four million views since 2014. Let’s just hope he continues to travel and bring jazz with him wherever he goes!
