If you spend much time watching reality competition shows, chances are you’ve seen at least a few episodes of The Voice.
For anyone who hasn’t, the premise behind the show is pretty simple. On each episode, a contestant comes out and sings for a panel of judges in a “blind audition.”
This means that they all have their backs turned and can’t see who’s performing. If they like what they hear, they can hit buzzers to turn around and compete for that person to join their vocal team. After all, both contestants and vocal coaches compete to win each season!
The performance we’re talking about today came from The Voice UK on its 2015 season.
Like any other version of the show, it all started with blind auditions.
The contestant in question here was Stevie McCrorie. As he walks out on stage, some acoustic backing music starts playing.
The song he’ll be covering is “All I Want” by Kodaline, a kind of acoustic ballad that has plenty of soul in it. But from the very first notes, it’s clear that McCrorie has a powerful voice of his own! Right from the first notes, the judges start to sit up in their chairs.
Although he seems like a pretty unassuming guy, he has so much soul inside him!
After he gets through the first part, his voice rises higher and higher.
At that, McCrorie gets his first buzzer from the judges! That first approval comes from judge Rita Ora—and she has to start fanning herself after hearing all the power and passion from his voice.
It’s clear that Ora is so into the song—but his performance is only getting better and better. After he gets through the chorus, he stretches his voice even further… and he even gets into the range of screaming and going hoarse!
At this, judge Tom Jones has to smash his buzzer as well—and the other two judges aren’t far behind!
Before long, McCrorie has pulled it off by getting a full four-chair turn!
Still, the performance isn’t quite over. After a few more huge vocal runs and shouts, McCrorie takes a bow and ends on a graceful note.
With that, all the judges and the whole audience gets on their feet to give him a standing ovation—and he definitely earned it. In all, the clip has been viewed nearly 25 million times on YouTube, and it’s easy to see why.
Although there are plenty of great performances on these shows, few of them have the passion and the soul that McCrorie did!
In all, this performance is just another example of why you ought not to judge a book by its cover.
No matter what someone does as their day job, you can never be quite sure what their hidden passions are. In McCrorie’s case, it’s clear that he was born to be a singer–after all, how many people can say they have a voice like his?
To top it all off, he picked the perfect song to sing and even found a way to surpass it. Now that’s talent!
Congratulations to Stevie McCrorie on a truly amazing performance! Be sure to check out the full thing in the link below:
