Though there are plenty of different singing and competition shows on television, The Voice seems to be the most interesting of them all.
For those who haven’t seen the show, each of the early episodes typically begins with contestants coming out on stage to do a “blind audition” before a panel of judges.
As they perform, the judges can hit their buzzers to turn around if they like what they hear. Once they do that, the judges compete amongst themselves to get that person to join their team.
At the end of each season, there’s one winning singer and one winning vocal coach as well.
Though it goes without saying, this set-up allows for plenty of drama and intrigue within each moment.
While each season has these moments, the one we’re talking about today comes from the show’s 2018 season. The contestant in question was Stephanie Skipper, a young woman who came prepared to sing “Piece by Piece” by the show’s own Kelly Clarkson.
Needless to say, it’s a risky choice to take on a song by the original person who sang it.
Even so, Skipper was more than up to the challenge!
From the very first notes, her voice was completely on point—and Clarkson noticed immediately!
Though it’s not a simple song to sing, Skipper has the chops to pull it off. Right away, her voice is soaring up in the high register and nailing every note.
Throughout the beginning of the performance, all the judges just sit there and listen to her performance. After a while, it’s clear that they’re going to have to compete for Skipper’s talent.
Still, Clarkson holds out the whole time and doesn’t hit her buzzer.
Even so, judge Adam Levine is the first one to break the judges’ silence.
He hits his buzzer, and the whole crowd surges with applause and cheers. A few moments later, judge Blake Shelton says he has to hit his as well!
After that, Skipper’s performance is essentially over and all the chairs turn around. Although she only got two of the judges to turn, she definitely still had a profound effect on Clarkson.
As she turns around to address Skipper, Clarkson can’t hold back her tears.
The whole time she pulls herself together, the audience is so quiet.
After that, judges Levine and Shelton spar with one another over who will win Skipper over. Before long, though, Skipper especially thanks Clarkson for writing the song she sang because it meant so much to her.
Because Clarkson was new to the season, she already filled her team up so quickly… but she still gets out of her chair to give Skipper a hug! After getting a bunch of feedback, it’s time for Skipper to make a decision.
Although there are plenty of people who want her, it’s time for Skipper to choose!
When it’s finally over, she goes with Adam Levine!
Still, Skipper’s performance shows just how important it is to connect with the song you’re performing.
While there are plenty of talented people who go on these shows, the ones who stand out always find a personal connection with the material and the judges—and they bring their own personality to the performance.
