Graduation is not something that people just make it to without trying.

It doesn’t matter if it is high school graduation, college graduation, or you’re graduation from med school. It takes a lot of work to make it to the end.

For high school students, their work is very structured. They have homework every night, a big test every month, and a few projects mixed in throughout the year. There are four marking periods for the students to earn good grades and teachers will call parents if a student starts to fall behind.

That is not something that happens in college. If a student falls behind in class, there is no one calling parents to explain what is going on. That is up to the student to figure out. Forget about making it to grad school, medical school, or law school if you mess up in undergrad!

One young man recently surprised his parents after a tumultuous history with school work. Hanss Mujica doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to school. He only scraped by to pass high school so he could participate in sports.

When it came time for college, Hanss didn’t have anyone on his back checking to see if he was doing his work. On his first shot at college, he messed things up and he was suspended from school with a 1.47 GPA.

But Hanss has finally graduated from college! He explained his whole story to the popular Facebook account, Love What Matters. Hanss explained what sparked his idea to surprise his parents.

“Their face was filled with utter disappointment and sadness. The last time I saw that face was when they found out my older brother passed away in car accident in my senior year in high school.

From that moment on, I told myself that I would never do anything to see that look in their face. I would never do anything to ever disappoint them again.”

The semester after he was suspended from school, Hanss decided to go back to school with a new attitude. But because he was suspended from school, he had to start paying for school out of pocket. By 2015, it became completely unaffordable for him. He spent the next year out of school.

Then 2016 came and he decided to quit his bank job so he could go back to school. He took a different job working for a scaffolding company to make money, even though he had a fear of heights. He was able to pay back his emergency loans and go back to school in the fall. He could only afford to take one class that semester.

“From then on out I went continuously, spring, summer 1, summer 2, fall 2017, all the way to spring 2018. My parents never knew when I was going to graduate. I always told them soon, but never when.”

The plan to surprise his parents took Hanss years to fully plan. He knew he wanted to surprise them after he graduated high school. His parents thought they were posing for a family photo shoot as part of a school project for their daughter.

His sister gave his parents an envelope to open during the photo shoot, as Hanss snuck up behind them with a giant poster board that said “they have no idea I’m graduating” on one side and “gracias mami y papa” on the other side.

“I spent six years in an out of the university but seeing the reactions on their faces was worth every sleepless night. It was such a wonderful feeling seeing their reaction.

Inside the envelope was the two invitation tickets for my graduation. “Por ustedes empecé, por ustedes acabe…” Gracias mamá y papá!”

The letter that is seen on the video is me expressing my appreciation towards them. I’ve learned that adversity is something that will somehow manifest itself one way or another in our lives, but it is how we persevere through it all that defines our character.”
