Is there anything more incredible than people spontaneously coming together?
In this day and age, it feels like the world is pretty doom and gloom. The news gets more terrifying every time you watch it. There aren’t many things positive going on in the world.
But then, people come together in surprising ways. People will often band together to defend or help someone in need.
Other times, people can show signs of patriotism that are overwhelming.
When the crowd at the softball game between Clovis High and Buchanan at Fresno State University’s Margie Wright Diamond on Friday were told the “Star Spangled Banner” wouldn’t play before the game they were shocked.
Some fans booed, but instead of starting anything nasty, the crowd did something incredible. They began to sing the national anthem acapella style!
It might seem like the decision not to play the anthem was politically charged, especially after the NFL recently made the decision to fine players who kneel during the anthem.
However, Event coordinator Bob Kayajania took responsibility for the choice and explained it is actually national protocol.
“The national protocol is the first game of the session you have the national anthem. The game after that are just played. We got caught. They started to play some music and the people took that as the national anthem and they all started singing, which I think is obviously a wonderful thing to show off their patriotism.”
Tiffany Marquez was in the crowd on Friday and witnessed the act of patriotism. She managed to pull her phone out in time and caught the moment on camera.
Afterward, Tiffany posted it on Facebook and it went mega-viral. Tiffany spoke with the local paper, Fresno Bee, Tiffany talked about the moment.
“Honestly, I was shocked (when) the announcer stated, ‘There will be no anthem, let’s just play softball. Within seconds, you could hear people in the crowd singing and the volume of their voices building. There I was, standing in the middle of a true testament to unity and patriotism.”
The video has over 1.3 million views just 48 hours after it was posted. Along with those views, it also has 35,000 shares, 22,000 likes, and thousands of comments.
One commenter was proud of this show of patriotism:
Great spontaneous patriotism. It was not meant to be anti USA. Apparently the national anthem is usually played at the first game and not those which follow. The coordinator said they will now play the national anthem at every game.
Another commenter also pointed out that the decision to not play the anthem wasn’t anything political:
To their defense, they played it before the first of two tournament games that day and not before each one. They since have changed their policy. But good on the audience for calling them on it.
While another person wrote on Facebook:
Good for the people to stand up and sing our Anthem. God bless them all. God Bless America
It seems that the fans have spoken and it was decided that they would play the anthem before every game moving forward.

We came to CIF D1 section championship game between Clovis and Buchanan and the announcer said “there will be no national anthem.” After some booing, the whole stadium stood up and started singing it on their own.
