Sarah McLachlan’s renowned hit “Angel,” often called “(In) The Arms of An Angel,” is a song that resonates with many.
Released in 1997 as part of her second album, Resurfacing, this poignant melody was composed as a tribute to her friend and Smashing Pumpkins keyboardist, Jonathan Melvoin, who tragically succumbed to an overdose.
The song’s beauty and its capacity to showcase a singer’s tender vocals against the simple accompaniment of a piano and an upright bass have led to it being covered numerous times since its release.
However, it’s not just the melody’s allure that has made it popular.
The song’s somber tone has also made it a common choice for memorial services, offering solace to grieving families as they envision their loved ones being comforted.
Despite its melancholic nature, akin to REM’s “Everybody Hurts,” a cover by Lucy and Martha Thomas has managed to infuse a touch of optimism into the song.
For those unfamiliar with Lucy Thomas, this teen talent was a semi-finalist on The Voice Kids in 2018 and has since launched multiple albums.
Her songs and videos can be found on her YouTube channel.
Lucy’s journey post The Voice Kids has been nothing short of remarkable.
As stated on her website,
“After her appearance on the show, Lucy was immediately offered a recording contract by Cavendish Records resulting in her eagerly anticipated debut album Premiere which was released on 1st February 2019. Since then Lucy’s worldwide following has continued to increase rapidly and in April 2020 she released her second album Encore.”
She also released two other albums titled Timeless and Destiny.
Lucy’s cover of “Angel,” which has already garnered over 4.9M views since its upload, is special for another reason.
It’s the second song where she has invited her 10-year-old sister Martha to join her for a duet.
Lucy has hinted that fans can expect more collaborations between the sisters in the future.
There’s no question about Lucy’s talent – her voice is stunning and her control is near flawless.
But Martha, her younger sister, is equally impressive.
Their voices blend seamlessly, creating a harmony that has left many viewers in awe.
One viewer commented,
“I’m totally stunned as to the perfect tonal harmony between you two lovelies. As the more advanced Lucy takes the lead and Martha follows resulting in nothing but pure enchantment as their gorgeous voices blend exquisitely. Yes, that’s probably how an angelic embrace feels like… 🥰”
The bond between the sisters is evident throughout their performance, with Martha often looking to Lucy for guidance.
One viewer noted,
“I love how her little sister looks into her eyes for strength and reassurance as they sing. And the care in Lucy’s eyes when she returns her gaze. I don’t which I love more, their beautiful singing, or the beautiful love they have for each other!”
Fans are already excited for the sisters’ next duet, and it seems Martha may also have a promising singing career ahead of her.
