That's one way to hit the high notes!

Being a choirboy isn’t easy! It requires an incredible voice and amazing vocal dexterity to hit those high notes and sing along with those complicated, classic melodies, many of which have hundreds of years of history behind them.

Plus, when puberty strikes and their voices began to grow deeper, choirboys usually have to accept that their time in the spotlight is over.

But one group of choirboys invented a very clever and utterly hilarious way to keep on sounding like angels, even as they got older, and the whole thing was captured on camera for us all to enjoy.

This clip begins with four choirboys of the King’s College Choir in Cambridge, England, standing side by side in a church.

The teens are putting on a breathtaking performance of Allegri’s ‘Miserere’, also known as ‘Miserere mei, Deus’, which translates from Latin to ‘Have mercy on me, O God’.

The song was composed back in the 17th century and is a popular part of the choir repertoire, performed again and again over the years in churches and cathedrals around the globe.

The boys have some beautiful voices, showing us how talented choir singers can be and how beautiful and heavenly they can sound when singing together in perfect harmony, but then something strange and totally unexpected starts to happen!

The boy on the end of the line suddenly produces a huge yellow balloon from behind his back.

It looks totally out of place, especially when held up next to these four singers in their traditional choir robes.

Slowly, while still singing along with the others, the boy brings the balloon higher, before lifting it around to cover his face and sucking out a little of the helium.

And if you’ve ever tried inhaling helium at a party with your pals before, you’ll know what kind of effect it can have!

After inhaling some of the helium, the boy pulls the balloon away and carries on singing, delivering a super high note that would be totally impossible for any typical male teen to pull off.

The boy at the other end of the line looks a little confused to suddenly hear such a high-pitched voice coming from his friend, but the rest of the group simply carries on singing!

It’s absolutely hilarious to witness the sudden transformation of the boy’s voice, but the resulting sound is actually quite beautiful, so maybe a little helium isn’t such a bad idea for choirs, after all?

Joking aside, this clip was actually put up as part of an April Fool’s prank by King’s College.

In the original video, the college chaplain joked that the school’s chemistry department had helped to create a clever little solution to assist the older boys with hitting those high notes.

Even though the whole thing was one big joke, it’s certainly a funny one, but as amusing as it may seem, we don’t recommend trying it at home! Inhaling helium might seem like a bit of harmless fun at first, but it can actually be very dangerous.

But that doesn’t stop us from enjoying this awesome clip, so be sure to check it out for yourself in the player below.
