Dovydas has done it again. The traveling musician found another talent out in public willing to do a little show with him.
He was jamming and tuning his gear in public and asking the crowd if anyone was willing to sing for him.
It didn’t take too long for him to get his wish.
A dad proudly introduced his daughter to him, exclaiming “Singer over here!”.
This young lady turned out to be a fan of Dovydas, as she admitted to having waited 6 years for the chance to meet him and sing for him.
And props to her dad for breaking the ice for her. That’s supportive right there.
Her name was Vera, and she’s a competent singer. She sings “anything” as she says.
So, after not being able to decide on a song, Dovydas helps her pick.
“Do you know any Journey?” he asks. The answer’s yes.
Dovydas gets the music going. He’s a literal one-man-band after all. Gotta loop the percussion and the backing chords before he lays over them.
Meanwhile, Vera needs to get her head into the right space. Performing for a crowd can give the jitters, and even slight jitters can damper your voice.
But it all works out. Dovydas finished up with the backing tunes and got his fingers on the guitar, and Vera showed us what we’d been waiting for.
The wait was worth it.
Vera’s singing voice is smooth as butter, and she puts her own spin on the song.
Not everyone has Steve Perry’s voice, and sometimes it doesn’t hurt to deviate from how the original singer did it.
You’ve gotta go with what works for your voice.
Vera’s doing a great job, but she isn’t a seasoned performer like the musician backing her up.
Eventually, she gets a bit confused and forgets the lyrics.
As good as she was doing, the pressure got to her.
Not to worry, though. Dovydas hypes her up and makes sure she doesn’t feel embarrassed. He gets the crowd to clap for her too until she finds her footing again.
Any cover of a Journey song will inevitably draw comparisons to Steve Perry.
Even Arnel Pineda, Journey’s current lead singer, couldn’t escape the comparisons despite having an immaculate singing voice himself.
We’ve got to remind ourselves that no one will ever sound exactly the same as the original singer, and that’s okay.
People sing covers for fun, not to be someone they’re not.
Vera here is a tried and true performer, even if she struggled a bit with the lyrics under pressure.
Thank goodness for the warm crowd, some of which are her family. And Dovydas, who’s just as much a hype man as he is a musician.
She gets a couple people in the crowd mouthing along to the lyrics, plus her family dancing and hyping her up too.
When it’s all over, the crowd gives Vera a round of applause.
What a great way to spend the evening, out in a venue like this too. Must have been nice to have a martini or a dinner watching this performance.
