As far as chilling renditions go, this one takes it.
The song “Hallelujah” was written by Canadian singer Leonard Cohen. It was released in 1984 but achieved little success at first. But since then, it’s had over 300 covers and versions all used in TV shows and films. It was the movie Shrek that helped the song’s popularity rise.
Here’s another version done at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.
They are Simply Three. Just a violin, cello, and bass. The man on vocals is Robert Moody. He was actually the groups maestro and conductor of the youth orchestra when Nick and Zack were members of the Phoenix Youth Symphony back in high school.
Glen McDaniel, Nick Villalobos, and Zack Clark make up the group and now that they’re back with their former mentor, why not release an awesome cover of a classic and showcase those talents.
The church looks like something out of Middle Earth.
Simply Three and Robert Moody have been at it for quite some time as the description states,
“Over the years Simply Three has been invited by Maestro Moody to perform with him and with some of his orchestras. It has been an honor for Nick and Zack to take the stage again with their beloved youth orchestra conductor, now as colleagues.”
Now let’s listen.
Classical instruments in a church always has that enchanting effect to it. And in a church that looks this good, it may as well be something out of a fantasy film. Nothing complicated, just three instruments taking the melody to new heights.
Mr. Moody can sing. You wouldn’t expect a voice like that to come out of his mouth when you look at the guy. It’s a bit of Josh Groban but not quite. But wow what an amazing voice.
“Well I’ve heard there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased the Lord. But you don’t really care for music, do you? Well it goes like this: The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift. The baffled king composing Hallelujah.”
The instruments fill the church and Moody’s voice does the rest. Imagine them asking permission from the church officials or the preachers. “It’s not a prayer group or bible study, we’re just playing music.”
Good thing they gave their permission. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have gotten this stunning rendition. Not unless they’d ask another church. Perhaps the structure of the church helped with the sound too. Churches do that.

Religious or not, you have to admit this is pretty good stuff. It takes you far up and beyond the material world where nothing else matters. Not the pandemic, not money, nor relationships. Just you and your own heaven.
