It’s definitely hard to be a teenager.
When anyone is that age, their body and mind are going through all kinds of changes. In addition to the pressure of trying to get good grades, get accepted into a good school and make decisions about what to do with one’s life, there are plenty of daily distractions as well.
On the one hand, you have to navigate the social scene and any potential romances you might be pursuing. On the other hand, there’s also the threat of bullies to contend with in some cases.
It was that aspect that made one audition on Britain’s Got Talent so inspiring.
The performance we’re talking about happened back in 2012.
As the audition begins, two teens walk out on stage who look pretty unassuming. Right away, judge Simon Cowell thinks he knows how this audition is going to go.
Out of earshot, he leans over to one of the judges next to him and whispers, “Just when you think things couldn’t get any worse…”. Regardless, he greets them a moment later and asks what their act is called. The duo are named Charlotte and Jonathan, and they are 16 and 17 years old, respectively.
Though he’s trying to be accommodating, it’s clear that Cowell isn’t expecting much.
The duo goes on to explain that their singing teacher put them together, and that the combination has been working well!
Still, Cowell notices that Jonathan hasn’t been talking very much and asks him if he’s shy. As he explains in the backstage clips, Jonathan has been insecure about his size for as long as he can remember because of school bullies.
As he explains, pairing up with Charlotte has given him a whole new confidence and has taken their singing talents to the next level. When their introduction is over, Cowell asks if they think they could win… to which they say yes.
With that, he clears the way for them to perform.
After Jonathan almost has a false start by coming in offbeat, the two start singing together.
From the very first notes, it’s clear that everybody in the room underestimated these two. Jonathan’s deep operatic voice is truly incredible! The song they choose to sing is “The Prayer” by famous pop opera singer Andrea Bocelli.
Singing together, Charlotte and Jonathan perfectly cover the high and the low notes and sound like absolute professionals. Before it’s finally over, Jonathan and Charlotte hit a few more incredible notes.
When it’s over, everyone gets on their feet to give the two a standing ovation.
Everyone in the crowd compliments the two of them, but Cowell has some interesting words for them.
He says that Jonathan’s voice is incredible—and that Charlotte is good, but she may actually be holding Jonathan back. At the end of it all, Jonathan tells the crowd that they came as a duo, so they’re going to stay as a duo. At this, the crowd gives them another big round of applause.
Though their audition was impressive, this audition hit home because it says so much more. Charlotte helped Jonathan get his confidence back after being bullied, and Jonathan in turn had his friend’s back. Needless to say, this is a friendship that should last a long time.
Congratulations to Jonathan and Charlotte on their amazing performance! Watch the full clip below:
