Though there are all kinds of people who try out for singing competition shows, it definitely pays to be outgoing.
The pressure to perform in front of a live audience composed of thousands of people is not an easy one, not to mention the millions of people who are watching along at home! Still, the stereotype that great artists or performers are outgoing or “on” all the time is a false one—sometimes, people only really turn it on when they’re ready to perform!
A recent audition from America’s Got Talent showed that all too clearly.
The performer we’re talking about is Benicio Bryant, who auditioned on Season 14 of the show.
As the clip begins, he walks out to the middle of the stage and greets the judges. As they interview him, they learn that Bryant is 14 and that he’ll be singing for them that day.
After that, they ask him how he even got interested in music in the first place. To that, he answers that his dad told the whole family that he wanted to be a rock star when he was 40 years old… which is a bit odd. But in the process, they started bonding over music.
After the interview is over, Bryant says he can’t wait to start singing.
A moment later, some piano chords start playing.
Without a doubt, Bryant looks like he’s a little nervous and takes a deep breath to steady himself.
A moment later, he opens his mouth and out comes the most beautiful and controlled voice! The song he’s chosen to sing is “The Joke” by Brandi Carlisle, and he does it with more maturity and confidence than anyone expected.
Though it starts off strong, it only gets better and better as he goes along.
Right from the beginning, the judges say that his voice gives them chills!
Although his voice is a little quieter and more understated than some of the other contestants, he gradually opens it up as he hits the chorus. By the time he’s through the chorus, he lets the full power of his voice loose and it soars through the whole crowd!
Without a doubt, nobody expected this song choice—and nobody expected such a little boy to have such an enormous voice.
When the performance is over, the whole crowd gets on their feet and gives him a round of applause!
When it’s over, they comment first on the perfect song choice!
As the judges feedback rolls in, everyone says that his song just kept getting better and better. By the end of it all, Simon Cowell has his say. He tells the crowd that being on a huge stage like that is terrifying, and he could see that Bryant was nervous to perform. Despite all that, though, he mustered up all the courage he needed to give a truly incredible performance!
Needless to say, the judges give him four yeses!
As this performance shows, self-confidence and self-belief are just as important as talent is.
Through his audition, Bryant got off to a strange start but remained sure of himself the whole time. By the end, it was his presence and self-assurance that won the day as much as his talent did—and the judges definitely took notice.
