In 2016, 12-year-old Beau Dermott decided to try her luck auditioning on “Britain’s Got Talent.” The little girl loved singing and musical theater more than anything in the world.
In an interview before her audition, Beau’s mother talked about how proud she was of her daughter for auditioning.
“When Beau’s at home, she’s really quiet, and so to get up on the stage to sing is a big thing because it’s tough,” she said. “I couldn’t do it.”
Then, it was time for Beau’s audition. She nervously walked up to the microphone and introduced herself to the judges. They asked her what she was going to sing, and she said, “Defying Gravity.”
The judges were both excited and nervous when Beau told them her song choice. “Defying Gravity” is a tough song to sing that requires some serious belting. Beau seemed so quiet and shy—would she be able to handle it?
The song began, and from the opening notes, it was clear Beau had an amazing voice! She belted out the song’s high notes with ease, and her huge voice filled the gigantic theater. The judges watched in awe as the shy little girl transformed into an amazing musical theater singer.
Beau sang a few verses of the song, and she ended by belting out one of the highest notes in the song. She made the incredibly difficult song look easy to sing.
“No one’s going to bring me down!” Beau sang at the end of her audition, smiling brightly.
When Beau finished, the entire audience leaped to their feet. They clapped and cheered for her, and one little girl was so excited she let out a high-pitched scream.
Then, it was time for the judges to give their feedback. But before anyone could speak, Amanda Holden slammed on her golden buzzer, sending Beau straight to the finals!
Golden confetti fell down around Beau while she looked in on shock. Amanda ran onstage to hug Beau.
After that, the judges quickly gave feedback. All their feedback was uniformly positive.
“We were not expecting that,” Simon Cowell said. “I like the way you came up here and just mugged all of us, like, ‘Yeah, I’m really nervous.’ But that’s how you do it.”
Beau ended up coming in fifth place in “Britain’s Got Talent.”
Beau may not have won the competition, but she still did incredibly well after being on the show. Soon after she was on the show, she landed a recording contract with Decca Albums. Her debut album, “Brave,” was released in 2017. Dame Vera Lynn also asked Beau to perform at her 100th birthday celebration. She ended up performing in front of Queen Elizabeth herself!
Beau is now 15, and she still regularly performs throughout Britain. She also often posts videos to her YouTube page. We can’t wait to see what Beau does with her career!
