There’s nothing that the nation loves more than a feel-good, slightly cheesy but totally awesome dance performance, so if that’s your thing, then you don’t want to miss out on seeing this video.
Ryan Boz and Alexis Garrish might only have been 15 years old when they performed their Open Swing dance to “Shut Up And Dance” by Walk The Moon, but their incredible dance skills were enough to blow everyone away.
And despite the clip being filmed way back in 2015, at the U.S. Open Swing Dance Championships in Burbank, California, we truly think that a dance like this is timeless.
If, like us, you’re curious about what it takes to be a good swing dancer, then first off you’ll want to learn what exactly goes into this style of dancing.
According to Swing Patrol, Swing dancing was created by African Americans in the early 20th century, and is often referred to as an ‘umbrella’ term as it encompasses a varied range of styles danced to Swing music.”
These styles include the Lindy hop, the Blues, Solo Jazz, the Charleston, the Balboa and the Shag, and dances are generally partnered.
Apparently, “The mother of Swing dances is the Lindy Hop, nicknamed the Jitterbug for it bouncy, infectious energy,” and as Ryan and Alexis’ routine quickly put a smile on our faces, we’re pretty certain that their routine features lots of inspiration from the classic Lindy Hop.
Both Ryan and Alexis have a huge amount to bring to the table, and it’s clear that they’re taking this competition seriously.
Ryan began dancing at the tender age of five, while Alexis has is trained in styles from tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, country, and hip-hop, and has won an abundance of awards over the years. It’s also no surprise that these two are so talented, as both their moms used to dance professionally back in their day.
Despite their song choice being modern, the couple proved that they can effortlessly combine modern music with a classical style of dance- and it works so well!
As Alexis and Ryan enter the stage, it’s clear that they’re in it to win it. Both are kitted out in smart black and red sequined outfits, and they ooze charm and charisma.
The song begins, and Alexis and Ryan instantly begin to sway their hips in time to the music. Some people might find it difficult to integrate a Swing dance into this type of song- but not these two.
The pair’s footwork is out of this world, and is executed with a grace and synchronicity which nobody would expect from such young competitors. But despite the routine being heavily choreographed, both Alexis and Ryan look completely relaxed and natural, as if they do this kind of thing every day (-which they probably do.)
The routine continues with lots of spins, kicks and hip swaying, and you can tell that Alexis and Ryan are wholeheartedly enjoying themselves.
It blows our mind how Alexis can perform so many spins in a row, and launch straight back into the routine after each one. The pair never miss a step, and they appear composed throughout the whole dance. They never even seem to break a sweat!
