Dancing is one of those activities that people of all ages can enjoy. From young to old, the internet is busting at the seams with performers showing off their skills – and some of them are pretty inspiring too.

The couple in the video below were participants in the 2020 National Shag Dance Championships (NSDC) within the Senior Division. Once the music begins, it doesn’t take long before they prove to everyone that they can still cut a rug like nobody’s business. In fact, they even took home an incredible award at the end of the event, a reason why you gotta witness their talent for yourself!

NSDC is an annual contest that takes place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Formed in 1984, it’s known as the United States’ longest-running Shag competition, and it’s also the recipient of two Feather Awards for being the nation’s “best swing dance event.”

Renee Scott and Gene Pope are two of many who signed up for NSDC’s three-day contest in 2020, which featured dancers in multiple divisions.

In the video, the couple’s invited onto the floor to take their turn in front of judges and fellow competitors. Renee is a cosmetologist and Gene is a retired fire captain according to the announcer. But besides their careers, they’re also quite amazing when it comes to Shag dancing!

Get ready for some smooth moves.

The duo takes hands and their feet start gliding to the music. Gene beautifully twirls his partner on the dance floor with ease, and Renee follows the flow. It’s obvious they have excellent chemistry working together.

The Carolina Shag is a dance-style that pops up at different social events in the South, although it first gained its popularity in the 40s along the beaches of the Carolinas.

Southern Living shared that the Carolina Shag has been described as being like a “cold beer on a warm night with a hot date and no plans for tomorrow.” The partner dance has also been referred to as the “swing dance of the South.”

Apparently, these two crazy kids have put a lot of time and practice into Shag dancing.

Renee and Gene are really entertaining to watch. Even audience members can’t help but cheer over their fancy footwork, along with their spins and smooth movements on the dance floor.

While not everyone is a talented dancer, seeing them in action is pretty inspirational. It’s a dance style that looks like a lot of fun to do – perhaps the reason why people in all age categories are participating in it.
