The Seattle Symphony has been recognized for its extraordinary performances, programming, recordings and community engagement.
The official website also mentions that the Seattle Symphony unleashes the power of music, brings people together and lifts the human spirit. But that’s what we already knew—what we were interested to find out is what happens when a rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot mixes things up a bit.
Fortunately, they filmed the results, and they were so awesome.
There is no better way to create a bridge between the Symphony and some of the most creative musicians on the popular music scene than the way the Sonic Evolution project does here.
You get the best of both worlds, and Sir Mix-a-Lot is just an additional bonus. Composer Gabriel Prokofiev orchestrated the rapper’s most famous hits, including “Baby Got Back” for the 2014 Seattle Symphony concert at the Benaroya Hall.
When Seattle’s own Sir Mix-a-Lot joined Ludovic Morlot, the famous conductor of the Seattle Symphony, and the Orchestra on stage, we get what they mean about the human spirit.
You can see it in action, and it is phenomenal. There was an entire hall full of women feeling good about themselves!
Sir Mix-a-Lot begins the show in the best way possible with a few excellent jokes, saying that it’s the “orchestral movements from the hood” night.
He also says that he’ll leave the space open “if a couple of ladies would like to get up on the stage.” After adding that “he doesn’t touch,” the whole room bursts out laughing. Every word he says is followed by some amazing sounds, and the Orchestra really did an amazing job. The real following, though, begins when women started coming. One after another, they fill the stage completely and Sir Mix-a-Lot first takes a selfie with all of them saying he learned the move from Ellen DeGeneres.
After that, he praises the conductor and the show begins—they start to play “Baby Got Back” and the crowd erupts!
What an amazing show!
We loved seeing all women having a good time. They danced their improvised choreography to the song and were into it. It’s a delightful way to prove that each of these ladies has some impressive, creative moves, and they come out when there’s great music and a relaxed atmosphere. Some of these women owned the show. This was definitely an opportunity to rock, and they enjoyed every minute of it. Sir Mix-a-Lot knows certainly knows how to lead the show, and to combine humor with his music. And he was right about the conductor—he’s the boss. The whole orchestra played their hearts out, so much so that the “Baby Got Back” never sounded better. We’re sure that everyone had an awesome night.
Who says you can’t merge concepts of high art and popular music?
If you thought you’ll never see a symphony performing a rap song, well, you’re not the only one.
They surprised us in the best way possible. It’s just more proof that there are infinite possibilities in the world of music. Since it was posted, the clip earned more than nine million YouTube views. Viewers enjoyed it and we enjoyed it, and the symphony moved some boundaries with this innovative piece. In all, it’s safe to say that things like this should be done more often because they are tremendous.
