Those in the United State Navy may seem like they often have a stern demeanor and are always focusing on serious matters. But sometimes even sailors need to have a little fun.
And what’s more fun than music?
We couldn’t tell you but this is probably why the United States Navy has a dedicated band, the U.S. Navy Band, which includes their official chorus the “Sea Chanters.”
The United States Navy actually has about seven ensembles: the Concert Band, Ceremonial Band, Sea Chanters, Commodores, Country Current, Cruisers, and Chamber Ensembles.
“The ensemble performs a variety of music ranging from traditional choral music, including sea chanteys and patriotic fare, to opera, Broadway, and contemporary music,” their website says. “Under the leadership of Senior Chief Musician Adam Tyler, the Sea Chanters perform for the public throughout the United States. At home in Washington, they perform for the president, vice president and numerous congressional, military and foreign dignitaries.”
The Sea Chanters were formed in 1956 by Lt. Harold Fultz when he brought a group from the Navy School of Music to sing chanteys and patriotic songs for the State of the Nation dinner.
They later expanded their repertoire also includes classical pieces, show tunes, and other types of music.
“Throughout their history, the Sea Chanters have remained true to the Navy’s watchwords of pride and professionalism, and they continue to flourish as a vibrant ensemble.”
One of the Sea Chambers’ most fun-filled performances took place in 2014 during the Concerts on the Avenue series at the United States Navy Memorial.
That’s when the Sea Chanters, backed by the U.S. Navy Band, had an outstanding show featuring a medley of songs from the award-winning Broadway show, “Jersey Boys.” Jersey Boys is a Tony Award-winning jukebox musical that documents the success and eventual break-up of the 1960s New Jersey doo-wop group The Four Seasons.
The Sea Chanters thrilled their audience with impressive and spirited renditions of “December 1963 (Oh, What a Night),” “Sherry Baby,” and “Rag Doll.” Their versions of The Four Seasons’ songs had people up out of their chairs and jumping up to dance.
They even had some sweet dances moves of their own.
Their vocal range was spectacular as many in the chorus were able to mimic The Four Seasons lead singer Frankie Valli’s signature high-pitched voice. You can watch their stunning performance in the video below.
