How big of a role does music play in your life? You might not realize it – but music really shapes who we are.

And what’s even more incredible to think about is how much you hear music throughout the day. On television shows, in supermarkets, in restaurants, on the radio, at the gym – music is literally playing in most places that we frequent. And even when we put ourselves out in nature to ‘get away from it all,’ there is still the natural music of birds and the wind blowing the trees. Pretty amazing, right?

And there are some particular songs that really strike a chord within us as humans. Songs that give us goosebumps, songs that make us cry, songs that make us feel uplifted and happy, and songs that bring a certain memory or moment come flooding back to you. Music is beyond powerful.

Sara Bareilles knows how important music is to humanity and in this particular performance, she also shows us just how moving music can be.

The singer-songwriter has won six Grammy awards and has gone platinum for her incredibly-written albums. Her gorgeous voice resonates with so many people not because just because it’s beautiful but because it tells stories that people can relate to. She creates songs that really touch and move people – so, it’s no surprise that her music career has done so well.

In the remarkable video below, Sara performs at the Kennedy Center. Her song of the evening? “Once Upon Another Time” – and she’d be performing it alongside the jaw-dropping National Symphony Orchestra.

Sara has explained that she wrote the song “about the loss of innocence and the nostalgia of childhood” – a sadness that many of us can relate to.

In her hauntingly beautiful song, Sara sings about her memories of truly being “free,” unburdened by the responsibilities and weight of becoming an adult and getting older. The talented singer-songwriter sings alongside Caroline Shaw, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and singer and Ben Folds. Making the performance even more special is that this particular arrangement was done by Rob Moose.

With all of the strings, wind instruments, brass, and drums – the song takes on a life of its own that gives everyone who watches it chills down their spines. Since it’s upload on YouTube, over 770,000 people are in complete awe of Sara’s performance.

There is so much energy coming from Sara’s vocals combined with the orchestra that it’s enough to move you to tears.

Of course, when an incredible video like this is uploaded to the internet, people from all over the world are going to weigh in. Here are just a few comments from admirers online:

“Two things in life that are not fair: How much talent Sara Bareilles has and how she’s not more famous than she currently is,” said Rob Sorbo.

“Sara, the only artist who’s brave enough to start a song at its first 2+ min of the song with just her own voice, without any instruments. this is the reason i really like her.. beautiful person, beautiful voice,” boasted Renzodesu.

“Sara Bareilles has written a lot of really amazing songs but this one is definitely my favorite. It’s just so gorgeous and transports me to an entirely different world,” shared Kurtsiecolferite S.
