It has been said many times over, but music can overcome anything.
However, in this video, we have undeniable proof. Here, Russian musicians got together and enjoyed playing a song by a German band. From the first note on, we could only sit back and enjoy these talented people getting together and creating something beautiful.
The result is an unbelievable blend of traditional instruments with a newer rock song!
The song “Du riechst so gut” was the lead single from Rammstein’s 1995 debut studio album Herzleid.
The title is said to be inspired by Patrick Süskind’s “Perfume,” and the song is actually about the inner thoughts of a predator hunting his prey. Now, how does that combine with Russian traditional folklore? As it turns out, the outcome is so great that you won’t believe your ears.
Since it was posted, more than 22 million YouTube viewers have proven just what a chord this performance struck!
We all have an idea of a traditional Russian instrument and the usual sound of it.
Most of us have probably thought at some point that traditional instruments may not be the best option for performing a contemporary piece. This ensemble proves all of that wrong. Led by one of the most recognized balalaika performers in Russia, Dmitry Kalinin, Russian Style Folkestra has been active for three years.
They rose to prominence after taking part in the Feel Russia Festival.
It’s the world project of the Russian Ministry of Culture, and it’s one of the most energetic and exciting Russian acts today. The Folkestra’s got a versatile repertoire that consists of Russian folk music, foreign music of different genres and their own compositions written in a folk-art style.
These people make folk music modern by mixing different styles to it.
You probably didn’t expect to hear Rammstein, Bon Jovi, Nirvana, or Adele on balalaika, but there it is—and what a wonderful surprise it is!
So many different instruments, you’ll even see a girl playing a logging saw!

The musicians are getting ready, the rhythm is slow, and you can see the audience eager to see what happens. Russian Style Folkestra is playing in a small concert hall here, and Dmitry Kalinin is a conductor. All of a sudden, there are colors and powerful sounds and everything goes to a fast tempo.
All the musicians let loose, and you can see that they’re enjoying themselves a lot.
They’re even head-banging like any metal music fan would do! As the camera goes across the room, you can see various traditional Russian instruments—including balalaika, garmon, domra and gusli, to gudok, vargan and rubel. And, of course, the accordion which stole the show!
This performance convinced us that it’s possible to mix any genre as long as you’re creative enough.
As soon as the rhythm goes faster, people in the audience realize the song that Folkestra is playing and everyone begins to smile.
It’s amazing, and you can see that people are having so much fun!
Russian Style Folkestra is known for always playing live, and each concert brings a little interaction with the audience.
These are the kind of performances that show that music has no boundaries—it is constantly reinventing itself!
