“Libertango” is a composition by tango composer Astor Piazzolla.

It was recorded and published in 1974 in Milan but its popularity grew with time—so much so that many artists have used it in movies, commercials and dance competitions.

We bring you a Russian version of the walking embrace.

Originated in Buenos Aires, tango is one of the most famous and influential dances of the world.

The title “Libertango” combines two Spanish words: “Libertad” and “tango.”

These words mean liberty and tango, and symbolize a break from classical tango to tango nuevo. Such a transition doesn’t come as a surprise, since there are eight main types of tango, with Argentine tango being the root of all tango variations.

What you’re about to see is a “Libertango” performance that comes from Russia.

The Moscow City Symphony Orchestra Russian Philharmonic plays tango as Inna Svechnikova and Dmitry Chernysh glide across the stage. It was filmed in Svetlanov Hall in the Moscow International House of Music in 2010.

The show is mesmerizing, particularly because so many stars appear in it.

We see Sergey Zhilin on stage in an interesting red suit, conducting the orchestra. He is considered to be one of the most successful musicians from Russia. In 2005, the virtuoso musician was awarded the title of the Honored Artist of Russia.

The video all begins with subtle hand clapping, a very recognizable tango sound.

The first thing you’ll notice is the overload of elegance.

The orchestra members are dressed up, people in the audience are smiling, the lights are perfectly well-adjusted and the acoustics are amazing. Everyone is clapping their hands, which is a way to invite a tango couple to the scene. Clad in a beautiful red gown, Inna holds her partner’s arms and the magic begins. We all know how passionate tango is—and Russians didn’t hold back those tango emotions either.

Perhaps some of the best moments are the solo performances by Yuri Medyanik on bandoneon and Dmitry Chernysh who plays the violin.

We must say that all instrumentalists involved in the majestic performance played their hearts out, and it felt as if they’d been preparing for ages.

That’s what we love to see—well-synced, put together musicians who create an incredible harmony together.

Dmitry and Inna have both retired from dancing professionally, and now work as dance instructors.

After watching the video, you’ll probably feel the need to watch more tango videos.

We were equally tempted and understand completely! Tango is about passion and seduction. It’s not only about dance moves, but the way partners look at each other, smile and touch is also important.

The essence of tango is hard to portray, but the pair from Russia does a very good job.

Much has been said about tango, but we must also say that this “Libertango” created an excellent opportunity for the two different cultures to melt together. We loved every part of the video—it was the pure beauty of dance and it proves how close music can bring together.

A decade long video has 40 million YouTube views, and most of us have certainly seen it more than once.

Wouldn’t it be incredible if there were more musical projects like this one?

Any country could give us their interpretation of tango, with some personal twist and flavor.

We’re would love to see a collection of those videos!
