Rod Stewart is a veritable legend of the microphone. He’s one of the all-time best selling recording artists, and to this day is still singing his heart out both on large stages and in intimate settings. One such intimate setting would be this recording of his performance on BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show, hosted by Chris Evans.

He wasn’t alone in this performance, however. He was joined on the morning radio show by fellow guest and common crooner Michael Bublé.

While this pair share some overlap of demographic, they have very different vocal styles and genres. While Rod is classified by his rock singer and songwriter status and raspy voice, Bublé is known for his butter-smooth charm and even smoother voice. This isn’t the first time this duo have appeared together though, check out this video of the two singing the Christmas classic “Winter Wonderland” to see how they sing together when they plan to!

But first, let’s check out what happens when they’re NOT planning to sing together!

It was only meant to be Rod singing in the first place.

And he sounds wonderful doing it! The song is Bonnie Tyler’s “It’s a Heartache”, a classic of Rod’s era. It’s perfectly suited to Rod’s voice as well, with his raspy aged rocker voice lending a punchy character to the song. In the studio he’s joined by three backup vocalists, three guitarists, a keyboardist, accordion player, and of course co-guest Mikey Bubes. The performance as a whole sounds awesome and I’m sure it was a real treat for whoever was listening on their commute to work that morning.

Bublé is happy enough just sitting in the corner minding his own business.

In fact he seems to rather be enjoying Rod’s show! He claps along and bobs his head, counting himself lucky to be there for his own private Rod Stewart concert. What he doesn’t know is that he’s about to be the audience participation…

Rod calls Michael up to the mic… which he was clearly not expecting.

Looking a little flustered and clearly caught off-guard, Bublé stumbles up while Rod whispers into his ear presumably asking him to sing along. And Michael does not seem ready for it!

I guess this song is from Rod’s era, not Michael’s!

After a few spotty attempts to get Bublés silky voice to intervene, Rod passes the mic over to Bublé, who seems to be freaking out at least a tiny bit. I feel you Michael, this is exactly what happens when you’re at a wedding and your aunt drags you up on stage to sing some ABBA song you don’t know the words to. That’s not just me right?

Finally, Bublé gets into the swing of it.

I wouldn’t say he looks particularly comfortable, but now his buttery voice can be heard alongside Rod’s once again. I’m still waiting around for the Stewart/Bublé collab tour to happen. You best believe I’d be buying that on pre-order!
