While there are plenty of amazing performances to see on television, the internet allows us a whole new way to discover talent.
In the old days, the only way you could get discovered is by performing at open mics or making it onto a television show and selling yourself that way.
Still, many of the old barriers to entry in the media simply don’t exist anymore. Instead of waiting around to be found out, people can just upload videos of themselves performing to the internet and find ways for people to discover them.
That’s the case with the performer we’re talking about today.
The artist is Reneé Dominique, and she’s a singer and songwriter with her own YouTube channel.
On her channel, Dominique does all kinds of different ukelele covers along with personal vlogs to let her audience get to know who she is.
Although there are tons of great performances on there, one in particular has been capturing the internet’s attention. Though it’s hard to do a straight cover of an iconic song and win people’s hearts with it, it’s sometimes a little easier if you give it a brand new twist.
And that’s exactly what Dominique did with her cover of “What A Wonderful World” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love.”
Instead of just performing one or the other, Dominique decided to do a mash-up of both that brings them together in a unique way.
As the video begins, it’s clear that she’s sitting on the roof of a building alone with her instrument. After a moment, she starts plucking her ukelele and singing Louis Armstong’s familiar lyrics to “What A Wonderful World.”
Although the original is in a deep, heavy register, Dominique’s version is light and gentle. For the first part of the video, Dominique continues in this vein until everyone is familiarized with her style.
After that, she changes things up.
About halfway through, she transitions into playing “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” which fits perfectly with what she’s already played.
Both of these songs are hugely beloved by their original audiences, and Dominique pays respect to both of them. Still, her decision to blend them together helps younger audiences appreciate them in a whole new way.
When it’s finally all over, she plays her last few chords on the ukelele and sings the last note. Finally, she looks up at the sky around her.
Needless to say, the video has been a huge hit on the internet.
So far, the clip has been viewed some 11 million times on YouTube—and it’s easy to see why!
Although she’s still a relatively small channel, Dominique’s videos have earned her nearly a million subscriptions online. Though it’s clear that she’s hugely talented, Dominique is partially using her channel as a means of advertising her talent to a wider audience.
While her singing videos can get plenty of views, it’s not always a way to make money directly. Fortunately, it’s a great way to get attention and spread awareness! If you liked this performance, be sure to check out the rest of her videos and tell your friends all about her.
