Of all the reality talent shows on television, America’s Got Talent is one of the most surprising.
Because the show is open to talents of all kinds, there’s no telling what kinds of acts are going to take the stage.
While the majority of the show is dedicated to singing and dancing routines, occasionally there’s a performer who comes along and shakes things up. In some cases, it’s just a stunt to get the audience’s attention. But in others, it’s a little more complex than that.
This performance was one of the more interesting cases.
The entire thing happened on the 12th season of the show back in 2017.
As the clip begins, sad music starts playing and the camera shows a clown in sad makeup getting ready backstage. For those who don’t know, the idea that clowns are secretly sad and depressed is one that goes way back in time—and this performer was playing on it.
After a quick introduction, the audience starts clapping and he goes out on stage. After that, he introduces himself as Puddles the clown. And his act is called Puddles Pity Party.
From the very beginning, the whole crowd is confused by his initial presentation.
After a few quick questions, the judges clear the way for Puddles to do his act.
While nobody knew what to expect at the beginning, everything changes as soon as he opens his mouth to start singing. After all, nobody even knew he was going to sing!
The song he chose was “Chandelier” by Sia, a haunting tune about addiction, depression, and isolation. Though the original song has a uniquely cracked delivery, Puddles’ version is entirely different. Instead of singing it as a pop song, he turns it into something operatic.
From the very first notes, all the judges’ jaws are on the floor.
Though it takes a minute for the audience to even know what’s going on, everything changes when he hits the chorus.
As he starts belting out the chorus, his voice soars and gathers so much power. After hearing it, the whole crowd gets on their feet and starts applauding.
Puddles keeps doing a faithful version of the song in the second verse, channeling so much emotion and belting everything as powerfully as he can. The whole song is half-spoken and half-sung as if it were a dramatic performance.
At the very end, he pulls the microphone out of the stand and belts the last few lyrics even harder!
When it’s all over, the entire crowd gives him a huge round of applause.
As it turns out, Puddles gave an incredibly original and talented performance! When it’s all over, Puddles himself is in tears—and even judge Simon Cowell is in tears as well!
For his part, Cowell says that he never wants to know who the real Puddles is because the character and the performance are so effective! Needless to say, Puddles gets the four yeses he’s looking for and advances to the next round! While there have been some great performances on the show before, this one was truly unique!
Congratulations to Puddles on his amazing pity party! Be sure to watch the entire performance in the link below:
