The royal wedding was beautiful.
Meghan and Harry both looked stunning, as did their families and guests. While it was a beautiful and memorable day for everyone there, most couldn’t help but wish that Princess Diana was there to see her youngest son get married.
They had a small group of personal friends and family members in attendance, and a few celebrity guests, as well.
Among them was Sir Elton John.
Elton previously had sung at the wedding of Prince William and Princess Kate and at the funeral of Princess Diana. He and Diana were good friends, and he had stayed close with the royal family over the years. Prince Harry introduced him in an interesting way.
Harry gave a speech after the wedding ceremony.
He said:
“Does anyone here know how to play the piano?”
After a few seconds, Elton stood up and walked toward the piano. He then proceeded to play several songs, including Your Song,” along with “Tiny Dancer,” “Circle of Life,” and the lively “I’m Still Standing.” All the guests seemed to be in disbelief of what they had just heard. It was amazing and perfect for the wedding.
Elton John was knighted by the royal family and shared a close relationship with Diana.
At the time of her funeral, he was devastated. When he spoke about her funeral, he said:
“I always thought the people that really felt for her and really were true to her she just was a bit airy-fairy towards in the end. Me playing at the funeral was one of the most surreal things I have ever done. What was going through my mind was ‘Don’t sing a wrong note. Be stoic. Don’t break down and just do it to the best you can possibly do it without showing any emotion whatsoever. My heart was beating quite a lot, I have to say.”
At her funeral, he played the song “Candle In The Wind.”
The beautiful lyrics seemed perfect for the princess. If you have never heard this song, the lyrics are:
“Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the twenty-second row
Who sees you as something more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did”
They are touching and sad lyrics, and the musician rewrote some of them just for the princess.
While the songs he performed at the wedding were much more upbeat, it reminded many people of his friendship with Princess Diana and it made it seem like a little piece of her was there with her son as he married his true love that day.
