Weddings are a great way to bring family and friends together. Gathered to celebrate the union of a happy couple, wedding ceremonies and the reception that typically follows also allows guests to reconnect and catch up. More than just the tear jerking exchange of vows, the delicious spread offered at the after party, and the vibe of it all, there’s also one part of weddings that gets everyone laughing together: the speeches.
Nothing puts the bride and groom in high spirits quite like an entertaining speech from the best man and maid of honor.
Those picked for the roles do not disappoint.
Take this eleven-year-old who put on a show as he delivered his best man speech.
Bill and Mary, the newlyweds, couldn’t wait to see what R.J. had in store for them. So the groom’s preteen nephew went ahead and got to it, going for the standard formal introduction.
“I would like to thank you all for coming to this wedding. I would also like to thank Bill and Mary for hosting this wedding. Special thanks to Bill for inviting me to be his best man.”
Until the eleven-year-old shifted gears and turned into full on stand-up comedian mode.
R.J. was not the least bit nervous at standing up in front of a crowd to deliver a speech.
In fact, he was pretty smooth about it.
“Me and Bill, we go back a long time. 11 years… pretty much my whole life. You know, we used to live in Iowa and every year he would come around to visit…with a new girlfriend. Sometimes two.”
Now usually, it’s a no-no to bring up the past, especially if it involves exes. But R.J. was on a roll, and Mary was really good-natured about it.
Turns out Bill used to come to R.J. for dating advice. And R.J. shares just how helpful he’s always been.
“He would ask me for advice. Usually I would say, ‘Kick ’em to the curb!””
The preteen had everyone laughing. Nothing about his hilarious speech sounded stiff, memorized, and over rehearsed. It was delivered in the funniest, most natural way that it had everyone listening.
Like a true gentleman, R.J. turned the topic back to the real star of his uncle’s life – his beautiful wife, Mary.
“But you know, when Mary came she was different – she seemed normal. So I said, ‘Go for it!’ And I’m happy you listened to my advice.”
Mary was giggling the entire time. No wonder she won R.J. over, too! She’s definitely someone who takes things lightly and loves a good laugh – factors that any preteen niece or nephew would immediately notice and appreciate.
A speech as delightful and entertaining needs a winning ending.
“I leave you with this one final thought… stop asking me for advice. I’m 11-years-old! Congratulations.”
It was so funny and unexpected that it earned the best man a standing ovation from the wedding guests. More importantly, the newlyweds were definitely entertained.
Bill made the right choice in picking R.J. to be the best man at his wedding. Usually, grooms would go for a best friend, a cousin, or a brother. But the eleven-year-old nephew rose to the challenge, exceeded expectations, and made everyone in the room laugh.
