Nothing quite awakens the spirit like a perfectly poetic song.
And with very little dispute, nobody is as articulate and prolific a songwriter as Robert Zimmerman, known to many as Bob Dylan.
When he emerged on the scene he was way ahead of his time, always managing to stay that way. Endlessly, he’s given us music that encompasses an entire spectrum of emotions and events. From songs of joy to despair to outcry to hope, Dylan has etched himself in time permanently.
In 2016, the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Dylan “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” It was his visions and poetry that have carried him far. To this day, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time. With more than fifty years of music in the making, Dylan’s works are commemorated with shaping American music.
With such an enticingly monumental catalog, it’s hard to pick just one of his songs as a favorite. But time and time again he is celebrated for his important contributions.
Take this simple and stunning cover by Miley Cyrus, for instance.
It’s not the first time the Disney-star turned pop-star has covered a song.
In fact, she’s well aware of the power of a good cover. Not only that, but she also possesses the vocal range to back it all up. Effortlessly, Cyrus treads and threads together elements of pop, rock, country, and soul.
From The Beatles to Pink Floyd to Blondie, Cyrus has given us more than a fair share of interesting takes on classics and rarities. With a bit of grace and discernment, she delivers time and time again. And while not every cover is a win, even the misses keep us captive.
In our video today, Cyrus has teamed up with Johnzo West to cover Dylan’s “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go.”
The cover was part of a 50th-anniversary celebration entitled “Chime of Freedom.”
“Two iconic forces that have impacted the past 50 years — the life-saving human rights activism of Nobel Peace Prize-winning Amnesty International and the incomparable artistry of Bob Dylan — are being saluted by 80 musicians who contributed new or previously unreleased recordings to Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International.”
As part of the honor, Cyrus joined forces with other musicians to give us a vocally pleasing cover of this classic tune.
The video echos the sentiments of the song, as Cyrus and the band appear in their own separate rooms in a dark, abandoned house.
While this particular cover does not have many frills, you come to find out those aren’t even necessary.
Cyrus graces us with a sweet honeyed voice, dripping deliciously with a beloved country twang.
This cover, straight-forward and honest, highlights her vocal abilities while paying the perfect homage to Dylan.
And with almost 18 million views and 110,000 likes, the internet agrees that there is justice!
Many have flocked to the comments, offering praise and appreciation.
“She has a way of bringing the feeling out in country music. Bob did alright…but his words through her mouth is just beautiful. I was close to tears a few times in this song.”
