“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is responsible for many good things. Firstly, it allowed us to see Jim Carrey looking all green and not in a silly “The Mask” kind of way, but in a grouchy buh humbug kind of way. Not that The Grinch isn’t silly…Secondly, it’s responsible for many classic Christmas moments.
One such moment is the song “Where are you Christmas” sung by the child Taylor Momsen as “Cindy Lou Who”, while looking out of a window all doughy-eyed at the Grinch’s mountaintop lair.
The song however, has over time developed a life of its own.
Originally written for the film by James Horner and Will Jennings, the song was later re-released with a full version sung by Faith Hill and written by Mariah Carey. Mariah was originally supposed to be the voice on the song, but because of legal issues involving her now ex-husband Tommy Mottola, she had to hand the microphone over to Faith Hill to re-record. But we won’t get into that whole story!
But the story goes on for the song!
With Jon Schmidt on the piano and Steven Sharp Nelson on the cello, The Piano Guys have performed a dazzling rendition of the song… and with a very special guest…
Sarah Schmidt uses her angelic voice to sing beautifully.
With Jon and Sarah being father and daughter, this makes for one heart-warming performance.
This song starts off slow, with just the piano and cello.
Jon is a spectacular pianist and his control of the keys is mesmerizing.
He’s in the zone and the audience are right there with him. You almost forget that this song is meant to be sung!
When Steven Sharp Nelson joins in with his cello the song rises up a notch.
Cello just has this ability to add weight and gravitas to a song don’t you think? It suddenly becomes more orchestral and the audience remains captivated.
Then it’s time for the magic…
When young Sarah Schmidt joins in the Christmas magic sends shivers down your spine. She has a sweet voice with vocal control beyond her years. Move over Taylor Momsen!…And Mariah Carrey…and Faith Hill…and Jim Carrey?
She’s obviously a natural-born performer and holds her stage presence with a smile.
The audience are clearly captivated and are having their hearts melted. They are silent and do not take their eyes off this very talented girl.
Sarah’s voice is enough to grow anyone’s heart two sizes.
If only The Grinch could hear SARAH’s version, he might not be all that grumpy! After her performance the audience clap rapturously. Sarah runs over and gives her dad a big hug. How cute can you get?
This really is a brilliant video. The quality of the production and the recording are so high and it really makes a difference watching it!
