Pentatonix are possibly the most famous and beloved modern a cappella singing group around. After forming in 2011 and winning the 3rd season of The Sing-Off, they have grown over the years and kept relevant. They are five highly talented vocalists from ultra low, to fantastically high. One of the members is even a beatboxer to act as rhythm section and allow the group to do full songs with only their voices.
But they have seen some changes since Avi Kaplan, their bass vocalist left the group to escape the hectic touring lifestyle that the group had found.
Replacing Avi is a new baritone singer named Matt Sallee. Matt takes the lead in their vocal-tastic cover of the well known song from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”.
It’s a fun new twist on a well known Christmas-time song.
The Grinch films (and consequently this song) have seen a few incarnations since the first animated iteration released in 1966. Most notably of these is undoubtably the Jim Carrey live action version from the year 2000, and recently a 3D animated version released in 2018.
The character of The Grinch is iconic (and increasingly relatable as you get older)
The video begins with Kevin Olusola, the group beatboxer who kicks it off with a bass-drum intro before getting the song off to a strong start with a symbol noise. Then the fun begins as the rest of the singers jump in.
And boy do they sound awesome!
Kirsten Maldonado is the next in. Like every member of the group, they have all grown up and changed their style a lot over the years. Kirsten is known for her charisma, and this video is no meek example if it!
She’s definitely got personality, but then, that’s what makes this group special, everyone has their own flavor.
Next in to be featured is Mitch Grassi, who is a tenor/countertenor (high notes). One of the differences to Mitch’s appearance over the years would be the mullet. Whether or not this is an improvement is debatable! Mitch and another member of Pentatonix, Scott Hoying also have a two-person singing group called “Superfruit”.
Scott Hoying, who is the other half of “Superfruit” to Mitch, is next to appear on screen. Scott has long been front and centre in the group, but for this particular video he takes a back seat to Matt with his low voice, which lends itself perfectly to the low, ominous yet fun tone of the song.
But the group as a whole work so well cohesively!
The video itself is super fun, with all the singers edited together on screen in a plethora or of arrangements. They all sing their seperate parts, but still manage to come together to sing parts together.
Filming this must have been a logistical nightmare!
This song is hilarious, nostalgic and excellently sung!
One thing is for sure though, the group sounds incredible together. You can hear that they’ve all been singing together for a long time, and they all have their part in the song, filling it out completely. While the song is different to the other versions that have come before it, it still keeps some of the classic lines such as “I wouldn’t touch you with a 39-and-a-half foot pole!”
