If you somehow haven’t yet heard of Pentatonix, it’s about time you did.

The three-time Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum selling pop group has recently released a new album, “The Lucky Ones”, and it’s everything we’d hoped for and more.

What makes Pentatonix unique is that the members of the a capella group don’t just sing their own vocals – they also use their voices to mimic the sounds of musical instruments, which takes their performances to a whole new level.

The band is currently comprised of Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee.

They largely promote their stuff on YouTube after separating from their record label, and it’s something that clearly works well for them.

Pentatonix have a huge fan base, with nearly 19 million YouTube subscribers and 2.2 million Instagram followers.

There are so many incredible Pentatonix songs, but if you’re new to the group, you have to hear “Coffee in Bed”.

It’s one of the catchiest songs on their new album, and, as with all Pentatonix hits, it sounds best when performed live.

The group made a guest performance on The Late Late Show with James Corden and gave a special performance of “Coffee in Bed” – and it’s no exaggeration when we say it’s one of the best performances we’ve seen this year.

The song was co-written by Kirsten and Scott, and is, according to Scott, “about those little things that you do for a person in a relationship that add up.”

The stage setup for the performance is typical Pentatonix style, with the group standing or sitting on chaise couches.

While the rest of the group takes on the job of the backing soundtrack, Scott opens the hit with the first verse.

As he sings, he paints a picture of somebody who’s lying in bed, slightly anxious, imagining a better life for themselves.

In the song, Scott sings as if to a partner, telling him, “I won’t take your words as a warning/ I’ll pick you up every time.”

The lyrics are incredibly touching, especially when paired with exceptional vocals.

As the chorus kicks in, the beat drops, and Kirstin joins in with the vocals, singing together with Scott.

One viewer commented:

“Omg the voices are marvelous, the song is just perfect I can listen [to] this all the time”

In some Pentatonix songs, each singer has their own verse, but Scott handles the majority of the vocals in this tune.

It seems to fit Scott the best, perhaps because he co-wrote it, and you can tell how personal it is to him – it comes from the heart.

If you’re a long-time Pentatonix fan, you’re probably in agreement that their new album is the best one yet. Speaking to James Corden before their performance, Scott explained why this may be, saying:

“We went in there with open hearts and open minds, and so it was really, really fun, and we’re very proud of what we created.”

And proud they should be! It’s difficult to get the formula right as an artist – you want to evolve while continuing to please your fans – but Pentatonix have found the perfect balance.
