One of the greatest gifts to late night television is Carpool Karaoke.
James Corden has brought many living musical legends onto the program and this week he brought one of the biggest ones yet.
Paul McCartney was on the show!
Even if you’re not the biggest Beatles fan (which, come on, how are you not?), it is hard to deny the impact that Paul McCartney has had on music, between his time in the band and his solo career.
Many artists have cited Paul McCartney and the Beatles as their inspiration to become a musician.
James Corden took The Late Late Show home (for him) this week and he stopped by Paul’s old stomping grounds, Liverpool.
This Carpool Karaoke segment is one of the longest in the history of the bit, clocking in close to 24 minutes. During it, James and Paul sing hits like “Penny Lane,” “Blackbird,” “Drive My Car,” “Let it Be,” and one of Paul’s newer songs, “Come On to Me.”
The managed to cram in quite a bit during their drive. They stopped by the real Penny Lane and got out to take a selfie. Paul also added his own signature to one of the signs.
They stopped by a barbershop where there were photos of Paul hanging on the wall and they got to see some young fans too.
One of the best (and most emotional) moments from Paul’s episode of Carpool Karaoke is when they talked about “Let It Be.”
Paul was inspired to write the song after having a dream in which he grandma told him to “let it be.”
James then recalled the first time he heard that song and told Paul:
“I can remember my granddad, who’s a musician, and my dad sitting me down and saying, ‘We’re going to play you the best song you’ve ever heard.’ And I remember them playing me that. If my granddad was here right now, he’d get an absolute kick out of this.”
To which Paul told him that James’s grandpa was there with them. James isn’t the only one who got teary-eyed for that moment!
They even found time to stop by Paul’s childhood home! The segment ended with Paul and James surprising a full pub with a live performance by Paul and his band.
Since the segment was shared on Facebook, it has already gotten 16 million views, 79,000 likes, over 14,000 comments, and over 200,000 shares in under 12 hours.
