On America’s Got Talent, the acts always find a way to surprise the judges with their talent.
Often times, big voices tend to come out of small packages. But it just goes to show, that you really should never judge a book by it’s cover when it comes to AGT!
Maddoc Johnson is a polite 13-year-old who showed up to his America’s Got Talent audition wearing a suit.
He looks the picture of a good little boy scout and based on his various activities (judo, wrestling, electronics club, fencing, chess club, and more), he really seems to give off a great All-American vibe.
The New Hampshire native likes to earn patches, so it should come as no surprise that his nickname is Patches. However, his nickname is actually a stage name!
Maddoc wrote his first song when he was seven years old and for his AGT audition, he told the judges that he was going to perform an original song.
He loves to perform and even starred in his middle school musical last year. When asked what he would do if he won the AGT prize, Maddoc was excited to share his plans.
If he won the million dollars, the first thing he would do is buy Hamilton tickets to see the show in New York.
Howie Mandel asked Maddoc what his original song was about and that is when Maddoc told him that it was about the “essence of performing.”
Howie happily replied:
“Who are you, you’re amazing already!”
However, Maddoc lied to the judges a little bit. What he performed wasn’t technically an original song – it was an original rap!
The judges were so shocked by the fact the Maddoc – AKA Patches – was rapping, they practically had to pick their jaws up off the floor.
Heidi Klum was the first judge to comment on the performance, she said:
“I was not expecting that, I don’t think anyone was expecting that!”
After Simon Cowell told Patches he was impressed with his original rap, Mel B agreed and said:
“I am just trying to wrap my head around what just happened, for a start. That’s what I love about this show, the element of surprise. You definitely surprised me! And I liked it!”
Howie added:
“I found it fascinating just because you’re so surprising. You’re smart, comedic, and good. You know what it’s like to be a white kid on the streets of New Hampshire. I’m going to have to start with the first ‘yes’!”
All of the judges were so surprised by his audition but in the best way possible. They quickly all voted yes to send him further in the competition!
